Early on rehearsals will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7:30pm and Saturdays either 9 to noon or noon to 3pm. Further on in rehearsal process rehearsals will run Monday through Friday from 7:30pm to 10pm. The rehearsal schedule will state specifically who is called and at what time. The roles of Annie, Kate, Helen, Captain Keller, James, and Viney will have a much heavier time commitment than the others.

About the Story:
This stirring dramatization of the story of Helen Keller is one of the most successful and warmly admired plays of the modern stage. Helen was blind and mute, and nobody knows what her fate might have been had she not come under the tutelage of Annie Sullivan, an Irish girl who had been born blind. THE MIRACLE WORKER is principally concerned with the emotional relationship between the lonely teacher and her blind charge. Little Helen, trapped in her secret world, is violent, spoiled, and almost animal-like. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind waiting to be rescued from that dark, tortured silence. Annie’s success with Helen comes only after some of the most emotion-packed scenes ever presented on the stage.

Characters:

Annie Sullivan – early 20’s, feisty, humorous fighter from a miserable background, visually challenged. Refuses to give up on Helen in the face of overwhelming odds. Must be physically strong and fearless – the fights between Helen and Annie are extremely demanding.

Helen Keller – able to convincingly play 10 – 12. Deaf and blind since toddlerhood, Helen has been allowed to become more of an undisciplined pet than a beloved daughter. She is brilliant, strong willed, determined, manipulative, and highly frustrated at being trapped in her darkness. This actress must be able to be convincingly blind and deaf. She must also be physically strong and absolutely fearless – the fights between Annie and Helen are extremely demanding. This actress must also not be afraid of germs, not mind getting dirty, eating with fingers, sticking keys in her mouth, slapping fellow actors, etc.

Kate Keller – late 20’s to early 30’s. Helen’s mother, the second wife of Captain Keller. Loving, overindulgent mother, cowed by her dominating husband, but learns to fight for her child.

Captain Arthur Keller – mid 40’s. A product of his time and upbringing. Believes that the man is the only authority in the family. Demands his own way; is brusque and tough on his family, but does have an underlying love for them.

James Keller – late teens to early 20’s. Captain Keller’s indolent son by his first wife; Helen’s half brother; sarcastic, deeply wounded young man who has never learned to stand up to his father – who scorns him for this weakness.

Other Roles:
A doctor
Viney – the main servant of the Kellers, mother of Percy and Martha
Martha – 8-12 – Viney’s daughter
Percy – 8-12 – Viney’s son
7 year old Helen – a young Helen may be cast for the early scenes
Aunt Ev – middle aged aunt of the family
Anagnos – teacher and leader at Annie’s school
Jimmie – Annie’s younger brother – a voice from the past
Blind girls – students at Annie’s school
A servant

DeeAnn Blair
Executive Director
817-999-8935 – cell

Artisan Center Theater
404 E Pipeline Road
Hurst, TX 76053-5832
817-284-1200 – Box Office
817-284-1419 – Fax
Where Texas Families GO for Entertainment
http://artisanct.com/

——————————————————————————-
You are subscribed to the following list:
Deaf Network of Texas

using the following email:
blog@deafnetwork.com

You may automatically unsubscribe from this list at any time by
visiting the following URL:

BETTER IP RELAY – EVERYWHERE! i711.com makes all your relay calls better.
