Medical Trio Workshop – DFW<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hired Hands is happy to announce we will be hosting a Medical Workshop on
\nSeptember 17, 2011 in Hurst, Texas<\/p>\n

The presenters will be Rachel St. John, MD, NCC, NIC-A and Jay
\nMoradi-Penuel, CI\/CT, OTC, NIC-Advanced, SC:L.<\/p>\n

The workshop topics will be:<\/p>\n

Ethics and Legal Considerations in the Medical Setting (Jay)
\nMedical Terminology (Rachel)
\nTeaming in the Medical Setting (Rachel and Jay)<\/p>\n

Part 1: Ethics and Legal Considerations in the Medical Setting (Jay) This
\nworkshop will provide an introduction of how the medical setting and
\nlegal settings intersect in the healthcare environment, be it on an
\nemergent, inpatient, out-patient or diagnostic settings.
\nPart 2: Medical Terminology (Rachel) This workshop is designed as an
\ninteractive experience for the interpreter who is commonly working in the
\nmedical setting. Focus is on becoming more comfortable with common medical
\nterminology, including Latin derivatives and body system-specific
\nterminology. Common nomenclature and acronyms will be discussed as well.
\nGoal is to provide basic working understanding and comfort with medical
\nterminology that aids the interpreter in providing effective communication
\nand cultural mediation. Discussion will include addressing personal
\nexperiences from members of the audience that they wish to share from their
\nown medical encounters in interpreting.<\/p>\n

Part 3: Teaming in the Medical Setting (Rachel and Jay) This workshop is an
\ninteractive experience involving a novel approach to the interpreting
\ndynamic in the medical setting, using case scenarios and ethical discussion.
\nThis approach is a \u201cTeam Approach\u201d in which the interpreter is a member of
\nthe medical team, with valued input to achieve linguistic presence.<\/p>\n

About the Presenters<\/p>\n

Rachel St. John, MD, NCC, NIC-A
\nRachel is a board-certified pediatrician, and a certified sign language
\ninterpreter through RID. In the past, she has served as an Assistant
\nProfessor of Clinical Pediatrics, and the Director of the Kids Clinic for
\nthe Deaf at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr. St. John
\nspecialized in providing a culturally and language-accessible
\npediatric medical home for Deaf and hard-of-hearing families. She received
\nher BS degree in psychology at George Mason University. She completed her MD
\ndegree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and then attended
\nGeorgetown University Hospital to complete her internship and residency in
\npediatrics. She spent a total of 5 years completing her residency, while
\nsimultaneously obtaining an MA degree in counseling from Gallaudet
\nUniversity. Currently, she is working as a Health Education Consultant with
\nthe Texas Region 10 Educational Service Center EHDI Pilot Program, as well
\nas a freelance interpreter specializing in medical encounters. She also
\ncontinues to serve as adjunct faculty in the graduate department of
\ncounseling at Gallaudet University, teaching the course in
\nPsychopharmacology.<\/p>\n

Jay Moradi-Penuel, CI and CT, OTC, NIC-Advanced, SC:L
\nJay has been interpreting professionally for 15 years in a variety of
\nsettings from Educational (K-12 to Doctoral) to Medical. Jay holds a
\nBachelor of Science in Recreation Management from East Carolina University.
\nHaving grown up in a Deaf family in North Carolina, Jay is a native
\nASL\/Signed English user. Jay is currently a private-practice, freelance
\ninterpreter in the Metro Washington, DC area, specializing in legal,
\nmedical, governmental and platform\/conference interpreting as well as oral
\ntransliterating. He is an active mentor in the Northern
\nVirginia\/Metropolitan Washington DC area.<\/p>\n

Registration is $65.00 and $55.00 for current ITP students. Registration at
\nthe door is $75.00.<\/p>\n
