{"id":15572,"date":"2011-08-24T02:00:09","date_gmt":"2011-08-24T07:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=15572"},"modified":"2011-08-24T02:32:44","modified_gmt":"2011-08-24T07:32:44","slug":"medical-trio-workshop-91711-dfw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2011\/08\/24\/medical-trio-workshop-91711-dfw\/","title":{"rendered":"Medical Trio Workshop 9\/17\/11 &#8211; DFW"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Medical Trio Workshop &#8211; DFW<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>September 17, 2011<\/p>\n<p>Hired Hands is happy to announce we will be hosting a Medical Workshop on<br \/>\nSeptember 17, 2011 in Hurst, Texas<\/p>\n<p>The presenters will be Rachel St. John, MD, NCC, NIC-A and Jay<br \/>\nMoradi-Penuel, CI\/CT, OTC, NIC-Advanced, SC:L.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop topics will be:<\/p>\n<p>Ethics and Legal Considerations in the Medical Setting (Jay)<br \/>\nMedical Terminology (Rachel)<br \/>\nTeaming in the Medical Setting (Rachel and Jay)<\/p>\n<p>Part 1: Ethics and Legal Considerations in the Medical Setting (Jay) This<br \/>\nworkshop will provide an introduction of how the medical setting and<br \/>\nlegal settings intersect in the healthcare environment, be it on an<br \/>\nemergent, inpatient, out-patient or diagnostic settings.<br \/>\nPart 2: Medical Terminology (Rachel) This workshop is designed as an<br \/>\ninteractive experience for the interpreter who is commonly working in the<br \/>\nmedical setting. Focus is on becoming more comfortable with common medical<br \/>\nterminology, including Latin derivatives and body system-specific<br \/>\nterminology. Common nomenclature and acronyms will be discussed as well.<br \/>\nGoal is to provide basic working understanding and comfort with medical<br \/>\nterminology that aids the interpreter in providing effective communication<br \/>\nand cultural mediation. Discussion will include addressing personal<br \/>\nexperiences from members of the audience that they wish to share from their<br \/>\nown medical encounters in interpreting.<\/p>\n<p>Part 3: Teaming in the Medical Setting (Rachel and Jay) This workshop is an<br \/>\ninteractive experience involving a novel approach to the interpreting<br \/>\ndynamic in the medical setting, using case scenarios and ethical discussion.<br \/>\nThis approach is a \u201cTeam Approach\u201d in which the interpreter is a member of<br \/>\nthe medical team, with valued input to achieve linguistic presence.<\/p>\n<p>About the Presenters<\/p>\n<p>Rachel St. John, MD, NCC, NIC-A<br \/>\nRachel is a board-certified pediatrician, and a certified sign language<br \/>\ninterpreter through RID. In the past, she has served as an Assistant<br \/>\nProfessor of Clinical Pediatrics, and the Director of the Kids Clinic for<br \/>\nthe Deaf at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr. St. John<br \/>\nspecialized in providing a culturally and language-accessible<br \/>\npediatric medical home for Deaf and hard-of-hearing families. She received<br \/>\nher BS degree in psychology at George Mason University. She completed her MD<br \/>\ndegree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and then attended<br \/>\nGeorgetown University Hospital to complete her internship and residency in<br \/>\npediatrics. She spent a total of 5 years completing her residency, while<br \/>\nsimultaneously obtaining an MA degree in counseling from Gallaudet<br \/>\nUniversity. Currently, she is working as a Health Education Consultant with<br \/>\nthe Texas Region 10 Educational Service Center EHDI Pilot Program, as well<br \/>\nas a freelance interpreter specializing in medical encounters. She also<br \/>\ncontinues to serve as adjunct faculty in the graduate department of<br \/>\ncounseling at Gallaudet University, teaching the course in<br \/>\nPsychopharmacology.<\/p>\n<p>Jay Moradi-Penuel, CI and CT, OTC, NIC-Advanced, SC:L<br \/>\nJay has been interpreting professionally for 15 years in a variety of<br \/>\nsettings from Educational (K-12 to Doctoral) to Medical. Jay holds a<br \/>\nBachelor of Science in Recreation Management from East Carolina University.<br \/>\nHaving grown up in a Deaf family in North Carolina, Jay is a native<br \/>\nASL\/Signed English user. Jay is currently a private-practice, freelance<br \/>\ninterpreter in the Metro Washington, DC area, specializing in legal,<br \/>\nmedical, governmental and platform\/conference interpreting as well as oral<br \/>\ntransliterating. He is an active mentor in the Northern<br \/>\nVirginia\/Metropolitan Washington DC area.<\/p>\n<p>Registration is $65.00 and $55.00 for current ITP students.
