Bus Never Arrives for Deaf Students<\/strong><\/p>\n

DALLAS – A couple of special needs students are supposed to catch the bus to
\nschool every day.<\/p>\n

But their parents said that\u2019s not what\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n

Fourteen-year-old Courtney Alladin was looking forward to the new school
\nyear at J.L. Long Middle School but he missed the first six days of class.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was mad. It was six days,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

His mother Tracey Alladin said the bus never picked him up and she had no
\nother way to get him to school.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have transportation right now. My car is down so that\u2019s why I
\ncouldn\u2019t get him to school,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Courtney is deaf and receives special services at the middle school,
\nservices which are not offered at other schools.<\/p>\n

After five days of calls to the school, the district and the bus service,
\nAlladin said she had enough and walked to one of the bus depots located
\nright behind her house.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told them I was gonna call FOX 4 News,\u201d she said. \u201cOn Tuesday they
\nhurried up and picked him up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Across town at Herbert Marcus Elementary, Sylvia Ramirez is facing the same
\nproblem.<\/p>\n

Her 8-year-old daughter, who is also deaf and gets specialized instruction,
\nhas yet to be picked up once for school.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey haven\u2019t picked her up. We\u2019ve talked to numerous people. Nobody seems
\nto be able to do anything,\u201d Ramirez said.<\/p>\n

She and her husband have been taking turns taking their daughter to school.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just very frustrating that they don\u2019t seem to care or do anything
\nabout it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Dallas County Schools, which operates the bus services, said it relies on
\ninformation from the school district to determine which students need to be
\npicked up.<\/p>\n

A spokeswoman would not discuss specific cases and would not answer
\nquestions about how many other student were affected.<\/p>\n

Instead, she issued a statement that said the bus service is evaluating its
\ntransportation services rigorously, investigating what happened and working
\nclosely with the school district.<\/p>\n
