HELP stands for “Hearing Effectiveness Leadership Program,” and this is an exciting new partnership between the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and Connectivity Source.

Connectivity Source, one of the largest Sprint/Nextel Dealers in the nation, will provide free of charge a cell phone, presently either a Samsung 640 or a Motorola IC 402, to people who have hearing loss and/or use hearing aids or cochlear implants. These cell phones have appropriate hearing aid compatiible Federal ratings that should meet the needs of a majoority of people with hearing loss residing in the area. In addition, Sprint activation fees will be waived for all HELP Project clients (although they would still have to sign the usual contract that any other customer would have to sign). The campaign to give away these cell phones will last for approximately two months – but HELP customers can keep their phones as long as they want, of course!! More details of the HELP Project will be announced at the press conference.

The location for the press conference will be at Hermann Square by the Reflection Pool. Hermann Square is the park just out front of City Hall (this is not the same as Hermann Park). The press conference will be located under the rotunda. The physical address is: 900 Smith, Houston, TX 77002. Hermann Square is bounded on the north side by Walker Street, on the south side is McKinney Street, and on the east side is Smith Street.

Please forward this information to anyone you know who has a hearing loss or works with folks with hearing loss.
