Keeping It More Than Just Weird at the Texas School for the Deaf<\/p>\n

Featuring Students’ Fall Musical Performance: Alice\u2019s Adventures in
\nFunkyland<\/p>\n

Austin, Texas \u2013 OCTOBER 14, 2011 In Austin at the Texas School for the
\nDeaf, students present \u201cAlice\u2019s Adventures in Funkyland\u201d with two
\nperformances daily, Friday October 14, and Saturday October 15, at 1:00 p.m.
\nand 7:00 p.m. in the R.L. Davis Auditorium at 1102 South Congress Avenue.<\/p>\n

Escaping her sister\u2019s constant criticism and stifling societal expectations,
\nTSD\u2019s Alice bumps into the \u201cWhite Rapper\u201d, when her curiosity takes over and
\nshe finds herself smack in the midst of a twisted and confusing other
\nworld.<\/p>\n

Alice\u2019s adventures take her on a journey into Funkyland, where she
\nencounters the \u201cMad Hater\u201d, meets \u201cFunky Dee\u201d and \u201cFunky Dum\u201d, crosses paths
\nwith the \u201cCaterpicker\u201d and faces the \u201cQueen of Darts\u201d, among a strange world
\ndotted with modern-day challenges and obstacles. Eventually, the \u201cCash-Out
\nCat\u201d helps Alice ultimately find her destiny and her purpose.<\/p>\n

With retro music, dance, design and a nod to pop-culture and reality TV,
\nTSD\u2019s Adventures may not be the Alice you recall from childhood. Students
\nadapted the original version to something more modern that they relate
\nbetter to.<\/p>\n

Jasmina Sifuentes (TSD senior, from Austin), who plays both the parts of
\nAlice\u2019s terrible sister-Sissy V, as well as the Queen of Darts, relates to
\nAlice\u2019s plight. \u201cBeing pretty or popular doesn\u2019t always prove beneficial \u2013
\nas Alice finds out. Treating everyone equally, as you want to be treated, is
\nthe real moral of Alice\u2019s journey. And, it works that way in life\u201d, she
\nsays.<\/p>\n

The Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) is the oldest continuously operating
\npublic school in Texas. Educating deaf and hard of hearing students since
\n1856, the campus also provides outreach and educational resources for
\nstudents, their families and professionals in the field throughout Texas.
