Deaf community asking for more interpreters<\/strong><\/p>\n

Communication is part of our everyday lives but just imagine how it would
\nfeel to lose the ability to hear or speak.<\/p>\n

No one probably understands that more than 24 year old Ana Chavez.<\/p>\n

She not only was born profoundly deaf but her entire family also suffers
\nfrom the same disability.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up with a lot of challenges,\u201d said Chavez. \u201cIt was pretty
\ndifficult.”<\/p>\n

Now that she’s older the Harlingen native said those challenges have only
\ngotten worse.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t want to hire a person that\u2019s deaf,\u201d said Chavez. \u201cHere in the
\nvalley it\u2019s very frustrating looking work the deaf are discriminated
\nagainst.. it\u2019s very difficult finding a job.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Chavez, the valley is really behind in terms of services for
\nthe hard of hearing.<\/p>\n

One of the most obvious problems she pointed out is the lack of interpreters
\nin the RGV especially during emergencies.<\/p>\n

Diana “Pepper” Mendez is a well known interpreter among the deaf community
\nin the valley.<\/p>\n

She told Action 4 there isn\u2019t enough interpreters in the valley.<\/p>\n

The statistic is staggering, according to Mendez there are only about 44
\ninterpreters to serve the nearly 10-thousand people who are either deaf or
\nhard of hearing.<\/p>\n

A brutal fact that Mendez said is affecting every aspect of those in the
\ndeaf communities\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n

Luckily one valley school is listening.<\/p>\n

South Texas College is the first valley school to offer an interpretor
\ncertification and this December they’ll graduate their first group of
\nstudents.<\/p>\n

Joann Vasquez is one of those students enrolled in the program she said
\nshe\u2019s eager to start working and give the deaf a stronger voice.<\/p>\n

STC will hold an ADA Awareness Day on October 25th at their Pecan Campus.<\/p>\n
