{"id":16303,"date":"2011-10-17T19:28:02","date_gmt":"2011-10-18T00:28:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=16303"},"modified":"2011-10-17T20:29:04","modified_gmt":"2011-10-18T01:29:04","slug":"deaf-community-asking-for-more-interpreters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2011\/10\/17\/deaf-community-asking-for-more-interpreters\/","title":{"rendered":"Deaf community asking for more interpreters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Deaf community asking for more interpreters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>by Mary Avila<\/p>\n<p>Posted: October 17, 2011<\/p>\n<p>Communication is part of our everyday lives but just imagine how it would<br \/>\nfeel to lose the ability to hear or speak.<\/p>\n<p>No one probably understands that more than 24 year old Ana Chavez.<\/p>\n<p>She not only was born profoundly deaf but her entire family also suffers<br \/>\nfrom the same disability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up with a lot of challenges,\u201d said Chavez. \u201cIt was pretty<br \/>\ndifficult.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now that she&#8217;s older the Harlingen native said those challenges have only<br \/>\ngotten worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t want to hire a person that\u2019s deaf,\u201d said Chavez. \u201cHere in the<br \/>\nvalley it\u2019s very frustrating looking work the deaf are discriminated<br \/>\nagainst.. it\u2019s very difficult finding a job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Chavez, the valley is really behind in terms of services for<br \/>\nthe hard of hearing.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most obvious problems she pointed out is the lack of interpreters<br \/>\nin the RGV especially during emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>Diana &#8220;Pepper&#8221; Mendez is a well known interpreter among the deaf community<br \/>\nin the valley.<\/p>\n<p>She told Action 4 there isn\u2019t enough interpreters in the valley.<\/p>\n<p>The statistic is staggering, according to Mendez there are only about 44<br \/>\ninterpreters to serve the nearly 10-thousand people who are either deaf or<br \/>\nhard of hearing.<\/p>\n<p>A brutal fact that Mendez said is affecting every aspect of those in the<br \/>\ndeaf communities\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily one valley school is listening.<\/p>\n<p>South Texas College is the first valley school to offer an interpretor<br \/>\ncertification and this December they&#8217;ll graduate their first group of<br \/>\nstudents.<\/p>\n<p>Joann Vasquez is one of those students enrolled in the program she said<br \/>\nshe\u2019s eager to start working and give the deaf a stronger voice.<\/p>\n<p>STC will hold an ADA Awareness Day on October 25th at their Pecan Campus.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like more information on the interpreter program at STC contact<br \/>\nJovanda Delgado at (956) 872-2015<\/p>\n<p>Source:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.valleycentral.com\/news\/story.aspx?id=675335\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.valleycentral.com\/news\/story.aspx?id=675335<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deaf community asking for more interpreters by Mary Avila Posted: October 17, 2011 Communication is part of our everyday lives but just imagine how it would feel to lose the ability to hear or speak.
