NAD Issues Notice About November 9th Television Emergency Alert System Test<\/strong><\/p>\n

On November 9, at 2:00 pm EST, all televisions in the United States will
\nshow an Emergency Alert System (EAS) test. Two federal government agencies,
\nthe Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Emergency
\nManagement Agency (FEMA), are testing this system for the first time
\nnationwide to find out how well it works.<\/p>\n

It is only a test. There is no emergency. The FCC and FEMA are asking many
\norganizations including the NAD to let everyone know that this is only a
\ntest. Please tell all your family and friends about this test warning and
\nthat there is no reason to worry.<\/p>\n

Deaf Truck Drivers Urged To Apply For <\/strong>CDL A And B Exemptions<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is pleased to announce that as a
\nresult of its ongoing advocacy with the United States Department of
\nTransportation (DOT) more than twenty deaf and hard of hearing truck drivers
\nwho submitted applications for an exemption from the DOT hearing
\nrequirements through the NAD in July 2011 are now being considered for full
\nCommercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL) including CDL A and B to drive vehicles
\nwith and without airbrakes.<\/p>\n

NAD and RID Embark on NIC Enhancement Process<\/p>\n

The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and the National Association
\nof the Deaf (NAD) announced that they are enhancing the National Interpreter
\nCertification (NIC) credential to strengthen the effectiveness and increase
\nthe value of the NIC credential for all stakeholders.<\/p>\n

Relay Consumer Alert: New FCC Rules On Toll Free Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is pleased to announce that on
\nAugust 4, 2011, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released its
\nfinal rules on the use of toll free (800 or 866 numbers). The order stops
\nthe assignment of new toll-free numbers to Video Relay Service (VRS) users
\nand requires the transition to local ten-digit numbers. If a VRS user wishes
\nto obtain a toll free number or continue using his\/her toll free number,
\nhe\/she must pay separately for the toll free number.<\/p>\n

NAD Submits Comments In Response To Senate HELP Hearing<\/strong><\/p>\n

The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions met at
\nGallaudet University on October 11, 2011 to discuss \u201cLeveraging Higher
\nEducation to Improve Employment Outcomes for People Who Are Deaf or Hard of
\nHearing.\u201d It was a historic event. Chairman Tom Harkin and Ranking Member
\nMichael Enzi heard testimony from deaf and hard of hearing panelists. For

NAD Sues Chase Bank for Refusing Relay Calls<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Association of the Deaf (\u201cNAD\u201d) filed a lawsuit against
\nJPMorgan Chase & Company (\u201cChase\u201d) on behalf of the Ohio Association of the
\nDeaf (\u201cOAD\u201d) and Lisa Toppin, a deaf Ohio resident. The NAD alleges that
\nChase\u2019s policy of refusing relay calls is a violation of Title III of the
\nAmericans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
\n1973. The NAD, with co-counsel Stein & Vargas, LLP and The Knoll Law Firm
\nLLC, filed the lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Southern
\nDistrict of Ohio.<\/p>\n

NAD Announces Expansion of College Bowl Competition<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Association of the Deaf is pleased to announce that the popular
\nNAD College Bowl competition will expand to include any new colleges and
\nuniversities interested in joining the biennial competition. Held at every
\nNAD Conference since 1988, College Bowl is a spirited academic bowl-style
\nevent that brings together contestants from top universities serving deaf

NAD Commends FCC for Reversing Angler’s Order<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) commends the Federal
\nCommunications Commission (FCC) for its October 20, 2011 order which
\noverturns its decision in 2006 to grant nearly 300 captioning waivers to
\nprovide captioning on TV. This FCC decision is called the “Angler’s Order”.<\/p>\n
