Job Summary – Interprets and\/or translates between spoken and signed
\nlanguage to facilitate communication in various situations.<\/p>\n

Minimum Requirements – Completion of an interpreting for the deaf program or
\nequivalent. Manual communication skills for receiving and sending messages.
\nAbility to accept supervision and to relate to faculty, administrators, and
\nstudents. Knowledge of basic college courses and the desire to gain
\nexperience in specialized college courses.<\/p>\n

Preferred Qualifications – Desire Texas Commission for the Deaf Interpreter
\nCertificate Level I or National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf IC, TC
\nor higher.<\/p>\n

Essential Duties and Responsibilities<\/p>\n

* Provides consecutive or simultaneous translation between languages.
\n* Knowledge of American Sign Language, Manual Signed English, Sign-to-Voice
\ninterpreting and transliterating, the manual alphabet, and the Code of
\nEthics established by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or the Texas
\nCommission for the Deaf.
\n* Interpret academic classes, lectures, student activity events and other
\nspecial events as needed\/requested.
\n* Consult with faculty\/staff regarding the role of the educational
\ninterpreter in the classroom.
\n* Listens to complete statements in one language, translates to second, and
\ntranslates responses from second into first language in consecutive
\ninterpreting.
\n* Expresses either approximate or exact translation, depending on nature of
\noccasion.
\n* Renders oral translation of material at time it is being spoken.
\n* May receive briefing on subject discussed prior to interpreting session.
\n* Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually and follows a
\nwork schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite.
\n* Thinks, reasons, and makes sound judgments to decide how duties and
\nresponsibilities are completed in compliance with college standards and
\nguidelines.
\n* Uses interpersonal skills and makes sound judgments to decide how duties
\nand responsibilities are completed between himself\/herself and coworkers,
\nthe supervisory chain, faculty, staff, students and customers.<\/p>\n
