To Prospective NASA Student Interns with Disabilities,<\/p>\n

NASA is looking to increase the number of students with disabilities
\npursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers through
\nour internship programs. We have a two-percent hiring goal. Students can
\napply for summer internships now! The deadline for submitting applications
\nis February 1, 2012. They can register for an account and look for
\ninternships anytime at the One Stop Shopping Initiative (OSSI): Student
\nOn-Line Application for Recruiting interns, fellows and scholars (SOLAR) at
\n http:\/\/intern.nasa.gov\/<\/a> . Summer 2012 internships run for ten weeks from
\nearly June through early\/mid August. NASA internships are also offered
\nduring Spring, Fall and Year Long Sessions.<\/p>\n

In order to be eligible to apply, students must be accepted as freshmen at
\nan accredited institution of higher learning, i.e., a college or university
\nat the time of the internship. This is what we call a rising freshman. NASA
\nhas internships for rising freshmen through doctoral students in STEM
\nfields. A minimum GPA of 2.8 is required to apply; however, applicants must
\nunderstand that the competition for internships is keen. The age limits for
\ninterns are eighteen years and up.<\/p>\n

Internships are available at all NASA centers nationwide. Students can
\nsubmit a completed application whether they apply to an opportunity or not.
\nHowever, applying to opportunities has the advantage of allowing applicants
\nto be considered by mentors who work in disciplines of interest and at a
\nparticular center. For example, an opportunity having to do with the Solar
\nDynamics Observatory (SDO) will be at the Goddard Space Flight Center in
\nMaryland because SDO is located there. Not applying to an opportunity means
\nthat prospective interns will be hoping that a mentor happens to read their
\napplications rather than directing their applications to mentors in fields
\nand at centers of interest.<\/p>\n

Students, who are selected for summer internships will receive an offer
\nletter by E-mail sometime after February 1, 2012. They will then have five
\ndays to either accept or reject the offer through their OSSI:SOLAR account.
\nThe offer will automatically expire after five days if no action is taken.<\/p>\n

Student Instructions for Applying for a NASA Internship, OSSI:SOLAR<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you are interested in applying for a NASA internship during 2012, please
\nfollow the detailed instructions below.<\/p>\n

The following instructions are for student interns.<\/p>\n

1. Go to http:\/\/intern.nasa.gov\/<\/a> (OSSI:SOLAR Launch Pad)<\/p>\n

2. Click \u201cQuick Launch to apply for Internship, Fellowship, or Scholarship
\nopportunities\u201d located in the top banner next to the SOLAR logo. If nothing
\nhappens, click it once or twice again.
\n https:\/\/intern.nasa.gov\/solar\/web\/public\/main\/<\/a><\/p>\n

3. The next display should read \u201cPremiere of Solar\u201d on the left and a
\nclickable box labeled \u201cFirst Time Student Users Register\u201d on the right. Or,
\nif previously registered, click the box to the right labeled \u201cCurrent
\nStudent Users Login\u201dand go to step 5.<\/p>\n

4. Complete the registration form to setup an applicant account and the
\nStudent Profile.<\/p>\n

5. Once the account is created, select the \u201cGetting Started\u201d tab for
\napplicants interested in obtaining more information. There you will also
\nfind three informative streaming videos or student tutorials.<\/p>\n

6. If an applicant has any questions, they should select the \u201cNeed Help?
\nClick here\u201d link at the top of the applicants Dash Board.<\/p>\n

7. There are six sections that must be completed in the application. They
\nare:
\na. Personal Information
\nb. Educational Information
\nc. Work History
\nd. References
\ne. Skills, Awards and Educational Activities
\nf. Acceptance Statement<\/p>\n

8. Applicants are required to identify at least one professional reference
\n(usually a professor or previous mentor). It is recommended that applicants
\ncontact these individuals in advance to let them know they will be receiving
\na SOLAR generated e-request from NASASOLAR on behalf of the applicant. The
\ndeadline for references to submit their letter is the same as the applicants
\nto complete their application.<\/p>\n

9. Once all six sections are complete (including receipt of at least one
\nletter of recommendation), the applicant can then apply to up to 15
\nopportunities. Be careful to only apply to opportunities you are eligible
\nfor and strongly interested in being considered for. Remember, more is not
\nalways better.<\/p>\n

10. The deadline to complete your application for Summer 2012 is February 1,
\n2012.<\/p>\n
