Summer Workshops at RIT\/NTID on Technical Training Announced<\/strong><\/p>\n

DECEMBER 16, 2011<\/p>\n

Rochester Institute of Technology\u2019s National Technical Institute for the
\nDeaf has announced next summer\u2019s Deaf Initiative in Technology (DiiT)
\nworkshops that provide technical training in an environment that uses sign
\nlanguage.<\/p>\n

Workshop participants get the benefit of direct interaction with the
\ninstructors without the need for interpreters that most professional
\nworkshops require.<\/p>\n

Six upcoming workshops focus on Business, English, Graphic Communication and
\nInformation Technology. Most workshops are five days and are held throughout
\nJune and July at Rochester Institute of Technology\u2019s National Technical
\nInstitute for the Deaf in Rochester, N.Y.<\/p>\n

Topics include \u201cStarting Your Own Business,\u201d \u201cMicrosoft Office 2010: Create
\na Dynamic Presentation,\u201d \u201cMicrosoft Excel 2010: Create an Electronic
\nWorksheet,\u201d \u201cDigital Sketchbooking,\u201d as well as workshops dealing with
\nworkplace correspondence and preparing for certification exams.<\/p>\n

DiiT was established by two grants from the National Science Foundation\u2019s
\nAdvanced Technological Education program. Since the NSF funding ended in
\n2006, NTID has supported the program. To date, nearly 100 workshops have
\nbeen held; more than 730 deaf and hard-of-hearing adults have attended
\nworkshops.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been the only deaf person in other workshops and felt left
\nout,\u201d said Gordon Marsillo, a mechanical engineering technician with the
\nNaval Air Warfare Center in Lakehurst, N.J. and a past DiiT participant.
\n\u201cAt DiiT workshops, with other deaf people and a signing instructor, I could
\nfully participate. I learned so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cost to attend a workshop is $500 and includes class materials, daily lunch
\nand refreshments.<\/p>\n
