{"id":17555,"date":"2012-02-07T23:14:14","date_gmt":"2012-02-08T04:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=17555"},"modified":"2012-02-07T23:51:25","modified_gmt":"2012-02-08T04:51:25","slug":"miss-deaf-america-upset-shes-unseen-at-super-bowl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2012\/02\/07\/miss-deaf-america-upset-shes-unseen-at-super-bowl\/","title":{"rendered":"Miss Deaf America upset she&#8217;s unseen at Super Bowl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Miss Deaf America upset she&#8217;s unseen at Super Bowl<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By Jamie Sotonoff<\/p>\n<p>February 7, 2012<\/p>\n<p>During the Super Bowl, television cameras showed everything from Eli<br \/>\nManning&#8217;s young family to hip-hop singer M.I.A.&#8217;s obscene gesture.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, they didn&#8217;t for one second show the National Association of the<br \/>\nDeaf&#8217;s Miss Deaf America Rachel Mazique \u2014 an Arlington Heights native<br \/>\nand Hersey High School alumna \u2014 as she signed the national anthem and<br \/>\n\u201cAmerica the Beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mazique doesn&#8217;t believe she appeared on the stadium&#8217;s Jumbotron,<br \/>\neither; wasn&#8217;t invited to stay for the game; and wasn&#8217;t placed near<br \/>\nsingers Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton.<\/p>\n<p>Even though she says she was never promised television exposure (but<br \/>\nwas told to smile the whole time, just in case), her treatment at the<br \/>\nbig game has upset many people in the deaf community, especially those<br \/>\nin the suburbs. Now her supporters are rallying for an apology from NBC<br \/>\nand the NFL through an online petition at change.org.<\/p>\n<p>As of Monday night, more than 1,000 people had signed the petition,<br \/>\nincluding some from as far away as New Zealand and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very upset by this,\u201d said Angie Kubiak of Mount Prospect, who<br \/>\nis deaf and whose husband and three sons also are deaf. \u201cWe waited and<br \/>\nwaited to see Rachel appear to perform, only to be disappointed.<br \/>\nEveryone of all ages in the deaf community across the country was<br \/>\nexpecting to see Rachel Mazique appear on TV, even if only for a few<br \/>\nseconds. We thought we would see something even go on the Internet. She<br \/>\nhas nothing from NBC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one from the NBC or NFL could be reached for comment Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>Mazique said she was grateful to sponsors PepsiCo and EnAble for<br \/>\nallowing her to sign at the game as the NAD ambassador but was \u201cvery<br \/>\ndisappointed\u201d about the missed opportunity to show the world American<br \/>\nSign Language. She questioned the point of her appearance, since her<br \/>\nsigning wasn&#8217;t visible to an audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hope was to bring national visibility to songs signed in ASL. It<br \/>\nwould have been wonderful to showcase \u2018America the Beautiful&#8217; and the<br \/>\nnational anthem in ASL on television,\u201d she said. \u201cI truly hope that<br \/>\nthis becomes a teachable moment for everyone involved, and that<br \/>\nAmerican Sign Language renditions of these iconic songs are broadcast<br \/>\nin future Super Bowls rather than being a token gesture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mazique, who now is teaching and working on her Ph.D. at the University<br \/>\nof Texas, is hailed as a role model for the deaf community.
