From Theory to Practice<\/p>\n

While much training is available to explore the theory and best
\npractices of legal interpreting, there are few opportunities for
\ninterpreters to learn the skills portion of the legal interpreting
\nspecialization. The focus of this session is bridging the gap between
\ntheory and application in legal training. Attendees will be led through
\nan indepth analysis of commonly encountered legal text. This analysis,
\npaired with practical tips on navigating the texts, will help them
\ndevelop their own interpretations that can be used in a variety of
\nlegal situations. A heavy emphasis will be placed on
\nconceptually accurate, culturally rich interpretation of phrases and
\nconcepts commonly encountered in the legal realm. The overall takeaway
\nwill be tools for answering the question: \u201cHow would I interpret
\n_______?\u201d<\/p>\n

Presenters<\/p>\n

Brandon J. Morgan, Sign Language Interpreter\/Educator, BEI Master, NIC
\nMaster, SC:L, NAD IV Since becoming an interpreter in 2003, Brandon
\nMorgan has had the opportunity to interpret in a wide variety of
\nchallenging assignments. In a fast-paced and interactive learning
\nenvironment, Morgan\u2019s goal is to provide practical strategies that
\nfellow interpreters can immediately put into practice. He considers it
\na privilege to help his colleagues gain confidence and enrich their
\nexisting skill sets by integrating their past successes with new
\ninformation.<\/p>\n

Amber D. Farrelly, J.D., B.A., BEI Basic
\nAmber Farrelly received her undergraduate degree from the University of
\nOklahoma at Norman and her Juris Doctorate degree from Arizona State
\nUniversity Sandra Day O\u2019Connor College of Law with the highest
\ndistinction for her pro bono work. She opened her private practice as
\na criminal defense attorney in 2009, and has worked with the Innocence
\nProject of Texas. In 2011, she joined The Fowler Law Firm, where she
\npractices and specializes in criminal defense. Amber specializes in
\ndeaf clientele and holds Texas sign language interpreter
\ncertification.<\/p>\n
