Call for Nancy J. Bloch Leadership & Advocacy Scholarship Applications<\/strong><\/p>\n

Applications are now being accepted for Nancy J. Bloch Leadership &
\nAdvocacy Scholarship stipend awards for the summer of 2012 (Application
\ndeadline: March 14, 2012). Qualified applicants will spend the summer
\nat the NAD Headquarters in Silver Spring, MD where they will
\nparticipate actively in NAD advocacy efforts to protect the civil,
\nhuman and linguistic rights of the American deaf community. Preference
\nwill be given to students pursuing careers in law, public policy,
\nnonprofit management or related fields. This scholarship provides
\nfinancial stipends to assist qualified applicants with travel, housing,
\ntransportation and related needs during the internship.<\/p>\n

Stipend Disbursement & Internship Duration<\/p>\n

* Duration of summer internships shall be on a full time basis for no
\nless than 10 weeks and no more than 15 weeks per year.
\n* Determination of the stipend amount for each qualified applicant is
\nbased on the length of the internship and the Application Criteria
\nbelow. For example, a qualified applicant studying in law school (Juris
\nDoctor degree) who commits to the entire length of the summer
\ninternship may be eligible for the full $6,000 stipend. Up to two
\nqualified applicants studying for their Bachelor\u2019s degree may receive
\nstipends of up to $3,000 each.
\n* Applicants are responsible for their own transportation, lodging and
\nmeals. The NAD is located near the Silver Spring Metro station, which
\nallows for convenient transportation throughout the DC Metro area
\n(MD\/DC\/VA). Applicants are also responsible for their own automobile
\nparking fees, if applicable.<\/p>\n

Application Criteria<\/p>\n

Applicants seeking Nancy J. Bloch Leadership & Advocacy Scholarship
\nconsideration must be currently enrolled in academic studies toward
\ngraduate or undergraduate degrees within the following or related
\nfields:<\/p>\n

* Law (Juris Doctor degree)
\n* Public Policy (Master\u2019s or Bachelor\u2019s degree)
\n* Nonprofit Management (Master\u2019s or Bachelor\u2019s degree)<\/p>\n

Applicants will be screened on the basis of the following criteria:<\/p>\n

* Deaf or hard of hearing;
\n* Demonstrated commitment to and advocacy for public service –
\nspecifically civil, human and linguistic rights of the American deaf
\ncommunity;
\n* Evidence of leadership abilities and potential for continued growth
\nin leadership skills;
\n* Excellent research, writing and presentation skills; and
\n* Strong academic and extracurricular credentials.<\/p>\n

Applicants must supply the following information as part of their
\napplication package:<\/p>\n

Cover letter and rationale for application<\/p>\n

* Full name
\n* Permanent address
\n* Phone number(s)
\n* Email address(es)
\n* Educational institution name and mailing address
\n* Proof of status as a current student, including academic and
\nfinancial standing
\n* Official transcript listing academic courses and grades awarded
\n* Expected year of graduation, degree and field of study
\n* Contact person at educational institution, e.g., internship or
\nemployment coordinator
\n* Anticipated start\/end dates of summer internship
\n* Resume detailing employment history, internships, co-op experience,
\netc.
\n* Description of community activities, especially those pertaining to
\nadvocacy and leadership within the deaf and hard of hearing community
\n* References (minimum of three)<\/p>\n

Applicants must indicate their area(s) of internship interest:<\/p>\n

* Education
\n* Early intervention
\n* Health care and mental health
\n* Employment\/vocational rehabilitation
\n* Sign language as a human right
\n* Technology\/telecommunications
\n* Transportation\/travel
\n* Other (specify)<\/p>\n

Application Deadline<\/p>\n

Applications for the Nancy J. Bloch Leadership & Advocacy Scholarship
\nmust be submitted electronically to Shane H. Feldman, NAD Chief
\nOperating Officer at scholarship at nad.org no later than Wednesday,
\nMarch 14, 2012. Incomplete or late applications will not be
\nconsidered. Scholarship recipients will be notified by Wednesday,
\nApril 25, 2012.<\/p>\n

Screening and Selection Process<\/p>\n

The respective points of contact for the NAD Headquarters and the Nancy
\nJ. Bloch Leadership & Advocacy Scholarship Committee shall coordinate
\nscreening of applicants and selection of recipients.<\/p>\n

The screening and selection process is delineated as follows:<\/p>\n

* Monday, March 19, 2012 \u2013 Applications are screened for completeness
\nand satisfaction of criteria by the NAD, and eligible applicants\u2019
\ndocumentation are shared electronically with the Scholarship Committee;
\n* Monday, April 2, 2012 \u2013 Top applicants are selected by the
\nScholarship Committee , and interviews are scheduled in the next few
\ndays. Local applicants will be interviewed in person at the NAD
\nHeadquarters. Remote interviews will be conducted via video or phone
\nfor those who reside outside the greater MD\/DC\/VA area;
\n* Monday, April 16, 2012 \u2013 Conclusion of interviews; NAD conveys final
\nrecommendations to Scholarship Committee;
\n* Monday, April 23, 2012 \u2013 Committee selects scholarship recipients;
\n* Wednesday, April 25, 2012 \u2013 NAD Headquarters informs scholarship
\nrecipients.<\/p>\n

About the Leadership & Advocacy Scholarship<\/p>\n

Established by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) at its 50th
\nBiennial Conference in Philadelphia, PA, the Nancy J. Bloch Leadership
\n& Advocacy Scholarship encourages and enhances the NAD and its
\ndistinguished history of advancing professional opportunities for young
\ndeaf and hard of hearing individuals pursuing careers in law, public
\npolicy, nonprofit management and related fields. Many NAD interns,
\ninspired by their passion and experiences at the NAD Headquarters in
\nSilver Spring, Maryland, have gone on to become successful leaders and
\nadvocates in their respective communities.<\/p>\n

Nancy Bloch served the American deaf and hard of hearing community
\ndiligently for nearly 19 years as Chief Executive Officer of the NAD.
\nIn 2011, when her tenure ended, the scholarship in her name was created
\nto honor Nancy\u2019s life-long commitment to invest in the future of young
\ndeaf and hard of hearing advocates so that they, too, can pave the way
\nfor others to follow in the future.<\/p>\n

About The Scholarship Committee<\/p>\n

The Nancy J. Bloch Leadership & Advocacy Scholarship committee has a
\nsimple, straightforward objective: to raise a specified amount each
\nyear to ensure funds are continually available to support annual
\ndisbursement of internship stipends and re-investment for fund growth
\npurposes.<\/p>\n

\nduring and since the 50th Biennial NAD Conference in Philadelphia, PA,
\nthe Nancy J. Bloch Leadership & Advocacy Scholarship relies on
\nindividual, organizational, corporate and foundation support to further
