Bloch Leadership &amp; Advocacy Scholarship Applications<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applications are now being accepted for Nancy J. Bloch Leadership &amp;<br \/>\nAdvocacy Scholarship stipend awards for the summer of 2012 (Application<br \/>\ndeadline: March 14, 2012). Qualified applicants will spend the summer<br \/>\nat the NAD Headquarters in Silver Spring, MD where they will<br \/>\nparticipate actively in NAD advocacy efforts to protect the civil,<br \/>\nhuman and linguistic rights of the American deaf community. Preference<br \/>\nwill be given to students pursuing careers in law, public policy,<br \/>\nnonprofit management or related fields. This scholarship provides<br \/>\nfinancial stipends to assist qualified applicants with travel, housing,<br \/>\ntransportation and related needs during the internship.<\/p>\n<p>Stipend Disbursement &amp; Internship Duration<\/p>\n<p>* Duration of summer internships shall be on a full time basis for no<br \/>\nless than 10 weeks and no more than 15 weeks per year.<br \/>\n* Determination of the stipend amount for each qualified applicant is<br \/>\nbased on the length of the internship and the Application Criteria<br \/>\nbelow. For example, a qualified applicant studying in law school (Juris<br \/>\nDoctor degree) who commits to the entire length of the summer<br \/>\ninternship may be eligible for the full $6,000 stipend. Up to two<br \/>\nqualified applicants studying for their Bachelor\u2019s degree may receive<br \/>\nstipends of up to $3,000 each.<br \/>\n* Applicants are responsible for their own transportation, lodging and<br \/>\nmeals. The NAD is located near the Silver Spring Metro station, which<br \/>\nallows for convenient transportation throughout the DC Metro area<br \/>\n(MD\/DC\/VA). Applicants are also responsible for their own automobile<br \/>\nparking fees, if applicable.<\/p>\n<p>Application Criteria<\/p>\n<p>Applicants seeking Nancy J. Bloch Leadership &amp; Advocacy Scholarship<br \/>\nconsideration must be currently enrolled in academic studies toward<br \/>\ngraduate or undergraduate degrees within the following or related<br \/>\nfields:<\/p>\n<p>* Law (Juris Doctor degree)<br \/>\n* Public Policy (Master\u2019s or Bachelor\u2019s degree)<br \/>\n* Nonprofit Management (Master\u2019s or Bachelor\u2019s degree)<\/p>\n<p>Applicants will be screened on the basis of the following criteria:<\/p>\n<p>* Deaf or hard of hearing;<br \/>\n* Demonstrated commitment to and advocacy for public service &#8211;<br \/>\nspecifically civil, human and linguistic rights of the American deaf<br \/>\ncommunity;<br \/>\n* Evidence of leadership abilities and potential for continued growth<br \/>\nin leadership skills;<br \/>\n* Excellent research, writing and presentation skills; and<br \/>\n* Strong academic and extracurricular credentials.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants must supply the following information as part of their<br \/>\napplication package:<\/p>\n<p>Cover letter and rationale for application<\/p>\n<p>* Full name<br \/>\n* Permanent address<br \/>\n* Phone number(s)<br \/>\n* Email address(es)<br \/>\n* Educational institution name and mailing address<br \/>\n* Proof of status as a current student, including academic and<br \/>\nfinancial standing<br \/>\n* Official transcript listing academic courses and grades awarded<br \/>\n* Expected year of graduation, degree and field of study<br \/>\n* Contact person at educational institution, e.g., internship or<br \/>\nemployment coordinator<br \/>\n* Anticipated start\/end dates of summer internship<br \/>\n* Resume detailing employment history, internships, co-op experience,<br \/>\netc.<br \/>\n* Description of community activities, especially those pertaining to<br \/>\nadvocacy and leadership within the deaf and hard of hearing community<br \/>\n* References (minimum of three)<\/p>\n<p>Applicants must indicate their area(s) of internship interest:<\/p>\n<p>* Education<br \/>\n* Early intervention<br \/>\n* Health care and mental health<br \/>\n* Employment\/vocational rehabilitation<br \/>\n* Sign language as a human right<br \/>\n* Technology\/telecommunications<br \/>\n* Transportation\/travel<br \/>\n* Other (specify)<\/p>\n<p>Application Deadline<\/p>\n<p>Applications for the Nancy J. Bloch Leadership &amp; Advocacy Scholarship<br \/>\nmust be submitted electronically to Shane H. Feldman, NAD Chief<br \/>\nOperating Officer at scholarship at nad.org no later than Wednesday,<br \/>\nMarch 14, 2012. Incomplete or late applications will not be<br \/>\nconsidered. Scholarship recipients will be notified by Wednesday,<br \/>\nApril 25, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Screening and Selection Process<\/p>\n<p>The respective points of contact for the NAD Headquarters and the Nancy<br \/>\nJ. Bloch Leadership &amp; Advocacy Scholarship Committee shall coordinate<br \/>\nscreening of applicants and selection of recipients.<\/p>\n<p>The screening and selection process is delineated as follows:<\/p>\n<p>* Monday, March 19, 2012 \u2013 Applications are screened for completeness<br \/>\nand satisfaction of criteria by the NAD, and eligible applicants\u2019<br \/>\ndocumentation are shared electronically with the Scholarship Committee;<br \/>\n* Monday, April 2, 2012 \u2013 Top applicants are selected by the<br \/>\nScholarship Committee , and interviews are scheduled in the next few<br \/>\ndays. Local applicants will be interviewed in person at the NAD<br \/>\nHeadquarters. Remote interviews will be conducted via video or phone<br \/>\nfor those who reside outside the greater MD\/DC\/VA area;<br \/>\n* Monday, April 16, 2012 \u2013 Conclusion of interviews; NAD conveys final<br \/>\nrecommendations to Scholarship Committee;<br \/>\n* Monday, April 23, 2012 \u2013 Committee selects scholarship recipients;<br \/>\n* Wednesday, April 25, 2012 \u2013 NAD Headquarters informs scholarship<br \/>\nrecipients.<\/p>\n<p>About the Leadership &amp; Advocacy Scholarship<\/p>\n<p>Established by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) at its 50th<br \/>\nBiennial Conference in Philadelphia, PA, the Nancy J. Bloch Leadership<br \/>\n&amp; Advocacy Scholarship encourages and enhances the NAD and its<br \/>\ndistinguished history of advancing professional opportunities for young<br \/>\ndeaf and hard of hearing individuals pursuing careers in law, public<br \/>\npolicy, nonprofit management and related fields. Many NAD interns,<br \/>\ninspired by their passion and experiences at the NAD Headquarters in<br \/>\nSilver Spring, Maryland, have gone on to become successful leaders and<br \/>\nadvocates in their respective communities.<\/p>\n<p>Nancy Bloch served the American deaf and hard of hearing community<br \/>\ndiligently for nearly 19 years as Chief Executive Officer of the NAD.<br \/>\nIn 2011, when her tenure ended, the scholarship in her name was created<br \/>\nto honor Nancy\u2019s life-long commitment to invest in the future of young<br \/>\ndeaf and hard of hearing advocates so that they, too, can pave the way<br \/>\nfor others to follow in the future.<\/p>\n<p>About The Scholarship Committee<\/p>\n<p>The Nancy J. Bloch Leadership &amp; Advocacy Scholarship committee has a<br \/>\nsimple, straightforward objective: to raise a specified amount each<br \/>\nyear to ensure funds are continually available to support annual<br \/>\ndisbursement of internship stipends and re-investment for fund growth<br \/>\npurposes.<\/p>\n<p>Currently supported through generous individual contributions made<br \/>\nduring and since the 50th Biennial NAD Conference in Philadelphia, PA,<br \/>\nthe Nancy J. Bloch Leadership &amp; Advocacy Scholarship relies on<br \/>\nindividual, organizational, corporate and foundation support to further<br \/>\nits goals.
