Literacy and Language Development workshop by:<\/p>\n

Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center<\/p>\n

Based on the Reading to Deaf Children: Learning from Deaf Adults manual
\nand DVD, this workshop teaches the effective book-sharing techniques
\nknown as “the 15 Principles for Reading to Deaf Children.” These
\nprinciples were developed based on research studying effective
\ncommunication strategies deaf adults use when reading to deaf and
\nhard-of-hearing children.<\/p>\n

The workshop focuses on key concerns:<\/p>\n

* Why is reading important?
\n* How do I use sign language to share stories?
\n* What if I don’t know all the signs related to the story?
\n* How do I keep American Sign Language (ASL) and English visible while
\nreading?
\n* How do I arrange the placement of the child and the book?<\/p>\n

Participants learn to recognize and apply the 15 principles for reading
\nto deaf and hard-of-hearing children. They practice these principles
\nand gain new skills that they can use with their own children or with
\nthe children they teach.<\/p>\n
