The displays will represent the artwork of eight artists from different periods and different mediums.

Smith settled in San Antonio, where he married Guadalupe Ruiz Duran in 1822; the union produced four children, all recorded by the Daughters of the Texas Republic. Beacuase of his gradual hearing loss, Smith always hunted alone, avoided crowds, spoke too loud, and taugth his dog to alert him to surrounding sounds. Personally chosebn by General Sam Houston, the ever-taciturn Smith took ove the spy and scout unit of the Texan army. His greatest contributon to the war was his pivotal role in the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836.

“It is my vision that this exhibit will bring attention to Smith’s amazing feats,” independent researcher, historian, author, and retired educator Steve Baldwin, Ph.D., said. Baldwin is an avid Deaf Smith enthusiast who arranged the exhibit. he has also written a colorful definitive 20-page commemorative booklet now available through the Texas Association of the Deaf (TAD). He added, “Deaf Smith’s contributions undersocre the fact that people with disabilities made Texass what it is today.”

The Deaf Smith exhibit is endorsed and supported by teh TAD, Texas Humanities, Texas School for the Deaf, Greater Austin Foundation for the Deaf, ViUDA Bistro, Communication by Hand, and Gallaudet University Regional Center-Southwest. An opening ceremony will be held at 9:00 a.m. on April 18 int he Legislative Conference Center, Room E2.002. After that, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the rotunda ground floor.

Download press release with pictures: (PDF format)
http://deafnetwork.com/wordpress/download/561/

Erastus Smith Media Contact: Steve Baldwin, Ph.D. dfsmithtx@aol.com or (512) 410-0415 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Come Celebrate Deaf Smith’s 225th Birthday with Exhibit and Ceremonies at Texas State Capitol AUSTIN, TX [March 30 2012] – Erastus “Deaf” Smith, a famous spy,…

Read more →

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[2
21,13289,410,13288,13279,11798,13287,11813,8060,13280,13281,13282,985,13286,4124,13285,13283,852,13290,17,853,8378,13284,5217,604,10341
post-18261","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-deaf-news","tag-austin","tag-battle-of-san-jacinto","tag-celebration","tag-commemorative-booklet","tag-communication-by-hand","tag-deaf-smith","tag-deaf-smith-exhibit","tag-erastus-smith","tag-gallaudet-university-regional-center-southwest","tag-general-sam-houston","tag-greater-austin-foundation-for-the-deaf","tag-guadalupe-ruiz-duran","tag-history","tag-legislative-conference-center","tag-press-release","tag-ribbon-cutting-ceremony","tag-steve-baldwin-ph-d","tag-tad","tag-texan-army","tag-texas","tag-texas-association-of-the-deaf","tag-texas-capitol","tag-texas-humanities","tag-texas-revolution","tag-texas-school-for-the-deaf","tag-viuda-bistro
https://deafnetwork.com/wordpress/blog/2012/04/18/capitol-exhibit-and-ceremonies-celebrate-deaf-smiths-225th-birthday/
Media Contact: Steve Baldwin, Ph.D. dfsmithtx@aol.com or (512) 410-0415 FOR RELEASE APRIL 18, 2012 Capitol Exhibit and Ceremonies Celebrate Deaf Smith’s 225th Birthday AUSTIN, TX [April 18, 2012]—Erastus “Deaf” Smith - a famous spy, scout and soldier of the Texas Revolution – is honored on what would have been his…
2012 DEAF ACTION CENTER BOYS’ SUMMIT Celebrating “Deaf” Smith - and his 225th Birthday!
