JOB DESCRIPTION<\/p>\n

TITLE: Sign Language Interpreter \/ Employment Specialist<\/p>\n

SUMMARY: Provides full employment service case management to deaf\/hard of hearing clients in assisting with job placement and retention. Provides for the development of jobs for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in conjunction with the Program Manager. Develops and maintains a network of employers to hire deaf and hard of hearing individuals Conducts job search workshops focused on application\/resume completion, interviewing skills, on-the-job communication and job retention. Provides sign language interpreting. Works cooperatively with other members of Deaf Services staff to maximize client services.<\/p>\n

SALARY: Grade III \u2013 Part Time<\/p>\n

JOB REQUIREMENTS:<\/p>\n

Education:<\/p>\n

* a bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation, business, marketing, or related human services;
\nand one year of documented experience providing employment services to individuals;
\nor<\/p>\n

* an associate degree in rehabilitation, business, marketing, or related human services; and
\ntwo years of documented experience providing employment services to individuals; or<\/p>\n

* a high school diploma or GED, and at least three years of documented experience
\nproviding employment services to individuals.<\/p>\n

Experience:<\/p>\n

* Experience with deaf and hard of hearing clients. Areas of preferred experience include job
\nplacement, social work, vocational rehabilitation, interpreting, or teaching.<\/p>\n

Skills:<\/p>\n

* Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as a highly cooperative member of a team
\nto develop and accomplish agency and departmental goals.<\/p>\n

* Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) in both expressive and receptive capabilities
\nwith the ability to provide quality interpreting services.<\/p>\n

* Excellent knowledge of deafness and deaf culture.<\/p>\n

* Knowledge of the Houston job market and future employment trends.<\/p>\n

* Extremely professional presentation and ability interface easily with hiring authorities.<\/p>\n

* Ability to work with public and private employers and other social service agencies.<\/p>\n

* Excellent writing skills.<\/p>\n

* Ability to develop jobs in the private sector.<\/p>\n

* Ability to use equipment that assists deaf and hard of hearing individuals such as a
\nvideophones, loops, and to use services that serve the deaf such as Video Relay Services.<\/p>\n

* Operation and availability of a motor vehicle.<\/p>\n

DUTIES:<\/p>\n

* Provide comprehensive case management services to ensure that clients are properly prepared to engage
\nin a successful job search.<\/p>\n

* Develop and implement employment plan for each client and to that end, set realistic goals, action steps,
\nand time frames for their successful completion.<\/p>\n

* Provide for supportive services to enhance the clients\u2019 ability to get a job (haircuts, referral for
\ninterviewing outfits, bus tokens for transportation to interviews, etc.).<\/p>\n

* Conduct job search skills workshops in ASL.<\/p>\n

* Solicit job orders and match clients to appropriate job openings.<\/p>\n

* Perform follow-up to determine and document clients\u2019 employment status. Maintain contact with client
\nand employer for 90 days to assist with and document job maintenance.<\/p>\n

* Work with DARS Counselors and send monthly reports on their clients\u2019 progress.<\/p>\n

* Negotiate job offers with employers.<\/p>\n

* Provide interpreter services for clients at job interviews<\/p>\n

* Other duties as assigned.<\/p>\n
