Hagemeyer and Alec McFarlane from Maryland attended this 2012 event; they also joined with five other MD library advocates to meet with their US representative, Chris Van Hollen. They discussed the need to build a future library — Deaf Culture Digital Library – on the national level and to have the US President proclaim March 13 – April 15 as National Deaf History Month.

Patricia Raswant, deaf library friend and professional, attended the whole three-day conference with her group from Virginia. She shared her experience on the FACEBOOK: This past week (22-24), I was involved with the National Library

Legislative Day that was sponsored by American Library Association. There were about 350 delegates from 50 states, and each group of delegates from a state talked with their legislators (both parties) of our concern about the broad and vague language and lack of civil liberties (privacy) in CISPA (Cybersecurity Information Sharing and Protection Act) yet the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed it yesterday on the 26th! Please call your senators to stop CISPA!

Patricia agrees that we should see many members of the deaf community participating in this important annual library political event that would involve deaf / disability issues and advocacy training. If interested to be involved in 2013 NLLD, please let your local library and friends group know.

Deaf Cultural Program In Maryland

On March 31, 2012, the Enoch Pratt Free Library and the Maryland Division of Library Development and Services co-sponsored a successful deaf cultural program, Maryland Legacy: A Celebration of Deaf Education and Sign Language in observance of Deaf History Month (March 13- April 15). This program paid tribute to Abbé de l’Épée, founder of the first public school for the deaf in the world, on the 300th anniversary of his birth. Four partners of the programs: (1) Maryland Governor’s Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, (2) the Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD), (3) the Maryland Association of the Deaf, and (4) the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). Three guest speakers: Molly Raphael, President, American Library Association; Chad Baker, Director of MSD Museum, and Deaf author, Jack R. Gannon, with Howard Rosenblum, NAD CEO and publisher of his book, WORLD FEDERATION OF THE DEAF: A HISTORY. There was also a proclamation of the month by Maryland Governor: Martin O’Malley.

NAD affiliates and other organizations serving the deaf wishing to have s similar program in their area may ask to form partnerships with their local library or state library.

Deaf Cultural Digital Library and National Deaf History Month

Both topics will be discussed at both NAD and ALA conferences this summer.
