Fort Worth Deaf & Hard of Hearing Community Meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n

SAVE THE DATE! – May 31, 2012<\/p>\n

Purpose:<\/p>\n

1. Organize and lobby for a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Sub-Committee
\nunder the auspice of the Fort Worth Mayor\u2019s Committee on Persons With
\nDisabilities (MCPWD)<\/p>\n

2. To develop a list of recommendations to be presented to City of Fort
\nWorth Mayor\u2019s Committee for Persons With Disabilities (MCPWD) on ways
\nthat the city of Fort Worth may become more accessible for the Deaf and
\nHard of Hearing Community.<\/p>\n

When: May 31, 2012; 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM<\/p>\n

Background: I, Tracey Michol, have enjoyed serving on the Fort Worth
\nHuman Relations Commission for the City of Fort Worth for the past
\nthree years. I have enjoyed your support and always look forward to
\nyou visiting the Human Relation Commission meetings.<\/p>\n

We have reached a turning point in the process of Fort Worth becoming a
\nmore accessible city for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community. Most
\nchanges to date have taken place within city government. Support is
\nnow needed from the Mayor\u2019s Committee on Persons with Disabilities
\n(MCPWD) to build a greater awareness and bring about needed changes
\nwithin the larger Fort Worth community.<\/p>\n

It is important that this be a community effort. I witnessed how the
\nLGBT community and their organizations rallied and organized around
\nissues they faced. The challenge for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in
\nFort Worth is the absence of community organizations working with
\ngovernment and business.<\/p>\n

Area(s) for Discussion:<\/p>\n

1. I have received several suggestions that a Deaf and Hard of Hearing
\nSub Committee be created under the MCPWD. A step towards that is to
\ninvolve the MCPWD. According the MCPWD\u2019s bylaws their purpose is:<\/p>\n

To ensure that all persons with disabilities have full access and
\nopportunity in life. The Fort Worth Mayor\u2019s Committee on Persons with
\nDisabilities is an organization of citizen volunteers, service
\nproviders and employers working together with the City of Fort Worth to
\npromote employment opportunities and increase public awareness of the
\nabilities of persons with disabilities; endorse and convey the
\nadvantage of access in housing design; communicate and facilitate
\naccessibility within the community and city government; encourage and
\ncoordinate open communication related to the issues of employment and
\naccess for persons with disabilities.<\/p>\n

Whatever your experience has been in the past, this is a new day and a
\nnew Mayor in the City of Fort Worth.<\/p>\n

2. Help develop a list of recommendations to present to the MCPWD to
\nhelp them understand the needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
\nCommunity and help greater Fort Worth become more accessible for
\npersons who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, late-deafened and
\nmay have recent experience with hearing loss. The list of
\nrecommendations can then be utilized by the MCPWD in assessing needs
\nand making recommendations to the Mayor and the City Council.<\/p>\n

The deaf and hard of hearing community is a diverse community. It is
\nimportant that the as many community members as possible attend this
\nmeeting to work together for our common good. Parents, teachers, sign
\nlanguage interpreters, and friends of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
\nCommunity are invited to attend.<\/p>\n
