No Interpreter? #DO-DO YOU? &#8211; Austin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Co-conducted by Safe Place \u2013Deaf Services and CAAG of Austin<\/p>\n<p>As a Deaf or Hard of Hearing individual in a work environment, have you<br \/>\never experienced any of the following:<\/p>\n<p>1) Feeling unsure if someone else\u2019s behavior is a sexual harassment?<br \/>\n2) Feeling \u201ctrapped\u201d because of communication barriers?<br \/>\n3) Discrimination because your request for a qualified interpreter or<br \/>\nanother accommodation to ensure effective communication to discuss a<br \/>\nsexual harassment situation was denied?<br \/>\n4) Not knowing your civil rights?<\/p>\n<p>If you answered \u201cYes\u201d to at least one of the above questions, come<br \/>\nlearn how to self-advocate as a Deaf or Hard of Hearing individual.<br \/>\nThere are ways you can handle sexual harassment or disability<br \/>\ndiscrimination by self-advocating for your rights or get advocacy<br \/>\nservices. When this does not work, there are specific guidelines to<br \/>\nfollow in filing complaints with various agencies. Come learn how to<br \/>\nimprove your life and the life of others in the most positive ways<br \/>\npossible. The training is scheduled and located at:<\/p>\n<p>DATE: Wednesday, May 23, 2012<\/p>\n<p>TIME: 6:15 pm to 8:30 pm<\/p>\n<p>Austin Public Library \u2013 Carver Branch (Central-East Austin)<br \/>\n1161 Angelina St.<br \/>\nAustin, TX 78702<br \/>\nBus Route: 2, 4, 6<\/p>\n<p>Light Refreshments will be provided.<\/p>\n<p>CAAG &amp; SafePlace<\/p>\n<p>The Speakers Terese Rognmo is the Advocate\/Educator for the Deaf<br \/>\nServices program at SafePlace. SafePlace is a non-profit organization<br \/>\nthat provides services for women, children, men who are currently or<br \/>\nhave recently experienced domestic violence and\/or sexual assault.<br \/>\nTerese provides case management (i.e., safety planning, assist with<br \/>\nlegal referrals, provides basic items, connections to other agencies,<br \/>\netc.) and community trainings (i.e., healthy relationships, bullying,<br \/>\nbystander, domestic violence, etc.). The Deaf Services program is free<br \/>\nand we practice confidentiality.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Determan, an ASL-native deaf individual, serves as the Deafness<br \/>\nResource Specialist 7A, through Communication Axess Ability Group, for<br \/>\na program funded by Texas DARS (Department of Assistive and<br \/>\nRehabilitative Services) \u2013 Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services<br \/>\n(DHHS). He works with various agencies and service providers regarding<br \/>\ntheir access obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act and<br \/>\nthe Rehabilitation Act. His training will empower deaf or hard of<br \/>\nhearing individuals with knowledge of their civil rights and how to<br \/>\nself-advocate.<\/p>\n<p>Accommodations for participants such as real time captioning (C.A.R.T.)<br \/>\nor sign to voice interpreter services must be requested by Thursday,<br \/>\nMay 17, 2012 by 5:00pm.
