AUSTIN — 142 Texas women lost their lives because of domestic violence
\nin 2010.<\/p>\n

Thursday hundreds gathered at the Four Seasons hotel to remember and
\nhonor them and raise money to stop this troubling trend.<\/p>\n

KVUE anchor Terri Gruca\u00a0was honored to emcee the event, which included
\nTexas Speaker Joe Strauss and Academy Award-winning actress Marlee
\nMatlin.<\/p>\n

Known for her inspiring work in front of the camera, many people don’t
\nknow that she is a survivor of domestic violence. She says she often
\ngets asked why she stayed in an abusive relationship.<\/p>\n

“I had no answers,” Matlin said through a translator. “Maybe because I
\nwas used to it or it made sense to me. I mean, I was sexually abused by
\nmy baby sitter, sexually molested by my teacher, and now beat up by my
\nvery well-known boyfriend. Maybe in the back of my head it seemed to
\nfall right into step.”<\/p>\n

Matlin says it took her years to realize she was strong enough to ask
\nfor help.<\/p>\n

She’s currently working on a project that will allow 35 million deaf
\nand hard of hearing people in America to text 911 for help.<\/p>\n
