NAD Releases Statement on Marriage Equality<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Board of Directors of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)
\nreleased a statement on marriage equality for all. In this statement,
\nthe NAD expresses strong support for the rights of GLBT deaf and hard
\nof hearing individuals to marry, with all the legal protections that
\nare afforded by marriage.<\/p>\n

NAD Statement on Marriage Equality<\/p>\n

The NAD affirmatively states its strong support for GLBT marriage
\nequality, consistent with equal protections under the Fourteenth
\nAmendment of the U.S. Constitution. This stance is also consistent with
\nthe NAD mission to safeguard the civil, human and linguistic rights of
\ndeaf and hard of hearing individuals – whose marriage rights have been
\nsuppressed throughout history. Accordingly, the NAD supports national,
\nstate and local policy or legislative initiatives that promote the
\nright to marriage equality for all people, including GLBT deaf and hard
\nof hearing individuals.<\/p>\n

NAD President Bobbie Beth Scoggins said, \u201cOur stance on marriage
\nequality reflects the historic commitment of the NAD to protection of
\nthe rights of all deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Marriage
\nequality, and the benefits that go with marriage, are a fundamental
\ncivil right that must be accorded to everyone, including GLBT members
\nof our community who deserve no less.\u201d<\/p>\n

The civil rights benefits of marriage equality will be emphasized
\nduring the 51st Biennial NAD Conference\/DeaFestival Kentucky to be held
\nJuly 3-7, 2012 in Louisville, Kentucky. On July 5, 2012, the GLBT
\nSection of the NAD will host its Deaf Equality Luncheon; all supporters
\nare welcome to register for the luncheon (Deadline: May 31, 2012) and
\nfor the NAD Conference. For more information, see

The NAD has invited many presenters to its Conference to advance the
\nrights of all deaf and hard of hearing individuals, and recognizes that
\nthere is diversity in their views with respect to marriage equality.
\nFurther, the NAD recognizes the need to work with a variety of people
\nacross the nation, including national, state and local policymakers and
\nlegislators, to secure equal rights for all deaf and hard of hearing
\nindividuals \u2013 including members of the GLBT community \u2013 as fully
\nparticipating citizens of the United States.<\/p>\n

The National Association of the Deaf is the nation’s premier civil
\nrights organization of, by and for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals
\nin the United States. Established in 1880, NAD was shaped by deaf
\nleaders who believed in the right of the American deaf community to use
\nsign language, congregate on issues important to them, and have its
\ninterests represented at the national level. These beliefs remain true
\nto this day, with American Sign Language as a core value.<\/p>\n

The advocacy scope of NAD is broad, covering a lifetime and impacting
\nfuture generations in the areas of early intervention, education,
\nemployment, health care, technology, telecommunications, youth
\nleadership, and more \u2013 improving the lives of millions of deaf and hard
\nof hearing Americans.<\/p>\n

On the international front, NAD represents the United States of America
\nto the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), an international human
\nrights organization The NAD is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
\nsupported by the generosity of individual and organizational donors,
\nincluding corporations and foundations.<\/p>\n
