NAD Announces First Bloch Leadership & Advocacy Scholarship Recipient<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is pleased to announce that
\nLisa Bothwell, a fourth-year law student at Loyola University in New
\nOrleans, is the first recipient of the Nancy J. Bloch Leadership &
\nAdvocacy Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Bothwell recently completed her tenure as a student attorney at the
\nLoyola Law Clinic. As a student attorney, she handled fair housing
\ndiscrimination complaints and represented indigent clients in cases
\nwhere landlords withheld security deposits. She has also clerked for
\nthe Law Office of Derek R. Van Gilder and the Bastrop County Courthouse
\nin Bastrop, Texas and the Advocacy Center in New Orleans, La. She is a
\nmember of the Louisiana Work Pays Committee, which advocates for
\nemployment for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Bothwell has assisted the NAD with its intake of deaf
\ntruck drivers for their Commercial Driver\u2019s License (CDL) exemptions
\nthrough her work for Stein & Vargas, LLP.<\/p>\n

Before beginning law school in 2009, Bothwell worked as an Outreach and
\nTraining Specialist at the Advocacy Center and as the Community
\nEmergency Preparedness Information Network (CEPIN) National Public
\nRelations Specialist for Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of
\nHearing, Inc. (TDI).<\/p>\n

Bothwell received her bachelor\u2019s degree in public relations from Texas
\nState University-San Marcos. As an undergraduate, she engaged in
\ngrassroots advocacy as a student body senator by reinstating American
\nSign Language classes to the curriculum and promoting access to closed
\ncaptioning on campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased to welcome Lisa Bothwell as the first recipient of this
\nprestigious scholarship,\u201d said Bobbie Beth Scoggins, NAD President.
\n\u201cLisa is an outstanding example of our young, deaf community, and I
\nknow the NAD will benefit greatly from her work with us this summer.<\/p>\n

The Nancy J. Bloch Leadership & Advocacy Scholarship, established by
\nthe NAD at its 50th Biennial Conference in Philadelphia, Pa. in 2010,
\nencourages and enhances the distinguished history of the NAD by
\nadvancing professional opportunities for young deaf and hard of hearing
\nindividuals pursuing careers in law, public policy, nonprofit
\nmanagement and related fields.<\/p>\n

Bloch served the American deaf and hard of hearing community diligently
\nfor nearly 19 years as Chief Executive Officer of the NAD. In 2011,
\nwhen her tenure ended, the scholarship in her name was created to honor
\nBloch\u2019s life-long commitment to invest in the future of young deaf and
\nhard of hearing advocates so that they, too, can pave the way for
\nothers to follow.<\/p>\n

\nduring and since the 50th Biennial NAD Conference in Philadelphia, Pa.,
\nthe Nancy J. Bloch Leadership & Advocacy Scholarship relies on
\nindividual, organizational, corporate and foundation support to further
