She was<br \/>\npreceded in death by her father; brother, Travis W. Barnes. She is<br \/>\nsurvived by her mother, Doris Birdwell Barnes, Tyler; her aunt, Louise<br \/>\nBarnes, Pasadena; and numerous cousins.<\/p>\n<p>Judy was a graduate of Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo., and<br \/>\nreceived her doctorate from East Texas State University in Commerce<br \/>\n(presently Texas A&#038;M University at Commerce). She taught at Cushing<br \/>\nGrammar School and Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches before joining the<br \/>\nfaculty of Tyler Junior College, where she taught for 20 years. After<br \/>\nteaching reading for several years, she began the Interpreter Training<br \/>\nProgram for sign language interpreters, where she was the department<br \/>\nhead until her retirement in May, 2008. She was also an integral part<br \/>\nof the Deaf Ministry at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler.<\/p>\n<p>Judy was very devoted and committed to the deaf community. She had been<br \/>\na beloved teacher, mentor and friend to all who knew her. She was an<br \/>\nartist, and also composed the music and words to numerous songs that<br \/>\nexpressed her faith in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Family will serve as pallbearers.<\/p>\n<p>Services will be held at Dickie Allen Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. on<br \/>\nWednesday, July 25, in Cushing with the Rev. Tim Roberts of Green Acres<br \/>\nBaptist Church, Tyler, officiating. Burial services will follow in<br \/>\nMcKnight Cemetery, Cushing. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 25,<br \/>\nfrom 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.<\/p>\n<p>Memorials may be made to The Hospice of East Texas Foundation, 4111<br \/>\nUniversity Blvd., Tyler, 75701; or The Dr. Judy Barnes Honorary<br \/>\nScholarship for the Sign Language Interpreter Training Program, Tyler<br \/>\nJunior College, 1400 E.
