{"id":19525,"date":"2012-08-04T14:08:57","date_gmt":"2012-08-04T19:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=19525"},"modified":"2012-08-06T00:00:59","modified_gmt":"2012-08-06T05:00:59","slug":"deaf-caister-footballer-prepares-to-kick-off-stateside-sporting-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2012\/08\/04\/deaf-caister-footballer-prepares-to-kick-off-stateside-sporting-career\/","title":{"rendered":"Deaf Caister footballer prepares to kick off Stateside sporting career"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Deaf Caister footballer prepares to kick off Stateside sporting career<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lucy Clapham<br \/>\nFriday, August 3, 2012<\/p>\n<p>A TALENTED Caister sportswoman has achieved a lifetime\u2019s ambition after<br \/>\nnetting herself a place in an all female football team across the pond.<\/p>\n<p>Gemma Newson is jetting off to the United States next week to take up<br \/>\nher position as goalkeeper for the women\u2019s football team at the<br \/>\nUniversity of Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The 20 year old already plays for the English and Great British deaf<br \/>\nfootball teams but said she cannot wait to kick off her American<br \/>\ncareer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been my dream to play in America, it hasn\u2019t quite sunk in yet,\u201d<br \/>\nshe added. \u201cThe whole team\u2019s aim is to win the nationals but my<br \/>\npersonal aim is to get the most experience that I can, and then bring<br \/>\nit back here and give that back to the Great Britain and England deaf<br \/>\nfootball team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former Caister junior and high school student had posted her<br \/>\nsporting CV online through a specialist website, with hopes of going to<br \/>\nplay on US soil after completing her studies at the University of<br \/>\nBedford.<\/p>\n<p>But she got an unexpected call when the University of Texas contacted<br \/>\nher as they were keen to sign her up as the team\u2019s goalie.<\/p>\n<p>At first she had to turn the offer down as they only offered her a part<br \/>\nscholarship but the Americans were so keen to snap her up they came<br \/>\nback with a full offer, meaning all her costs are paid for.<\/p>\n<p>Gemma said she was keen to play in America as women\u2019s football is a<br \/>\n\u201cmassive thing\u201d in the States and much harder than it is in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>She will now be staying on campus with her international team mates<br \/>\nwhile continuing to study sports science and is looking forward to<br \/>\nStateside university life and getting to see more of the country<br \/>\nthrough her footballing.<\/p>\n<p>Gemma, who also studied at East Norfolk Sixth Form College, said: \u201cThe<br \/>\nseason runs from late August to December and we have only got five home<br \/>\ngames, the rest are away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m nervous definitely. We get there and we\u2019re straight into the<br \/>\npre-season and up at 6 o\u2019clock in the morning for training every day.<br \/>\nI\u2019m not really a morning person so that will be quite hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mum Debbie, 47, added: \u201cShe\u2019d always said \u2018one day I\u2019m going to go<br \/>\nto America and play football\u2019 and here we are. I\u2019m very proud of her,<br \/>\nshe\u2019s done very well.
