A TALENTED Caister sportswoman has achieved a lifetime\u2019s ambition after
\nnetting herself a place in an all female football team across the pond.<\/p>\n

Gemma Newson is jetting off to the United States next week to take up
\nher position as goalkeeper for the women\u2019s football team at the
\nUniversity of Texas.<\/p>\n

The 20 year old already plays for the English and Great British deaf
\nfootball teams but said she cannot wait to kick off her American
\ncareer.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been my dream to play in America, it hasn\u2019t quite sunk in yet,\u201d
\nshe added. \u201cThe whole team\u2019s aim is to win the nationals but my
\npersonal aim is to get the most experience that I can, and then bring
\nit back here and give that back to the Great Britain and England deaf
\nfootball team.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former Caister junior and high school student had posted her
\nsporting CV online through a specialist website, with hopes of going to
\nplay on US soil after completing her studies at the University of
\nBedford.<\/p>\n

But she got an unexpected call when the University of Texas contacted
\nher as they were keen to sign her up as the team\u2019s goalie.<\/p>\n

At first she had to turn the offer down as they only offered her a part
\nscholarship but the Americans were so keen to snap her up they came
\nback with a full offer, meaning all her costs are paid for.<\/p>\n

Gemma said she was keen to play in America as women\u2019s football is a
\n\u201cmassive thing\u201d in the States and much harder than it is in the UK.<\/p>\n

She will now be staying on campus with her international team mates
\nwhile continuing to study sports science and is looking forward to
\nStateside university life and getting to see more of the country
\nthrough her footballing.<\/p>\n

Gemma, who also studied at East Norfolk Sixth Form College, said: \u201cThe
\nseason runs from late August to December and we have only got five home
\ngames, the rest are away.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m nervous definitely. We get there and we\u2019re straight into the
\npre-season and up at 6 o\u2019clock in the morning for training every day.
\nI\u2019m not really a morning person so that will be quite hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mum Debbie, 47, added: \u201cShe\u2019d always said \u2018one day I\u2019m going to go
\nto America and play football\u2019 and here we are. I\u2019m very proud of her,
\nshe\u2019s done very well. Everybody says the best place for training,
\nespecially in women\u2019s football, is America.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo for someone to offer her that full scholarship as well, you can\u2019t
\npossibly turn it down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gemma\u2019s US signing is not the only exciting boost for her footballing
\ncareer as she is also hoping to take part in next year\u2019s Deaflympics.<\/p>\n

She is looking for sponsorship to help her get to Bulgaria as athletes
\nare self-funded and she needs to raise \u00a34,000 to compete.<\/p>\n
