Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now Extended to TEN SESSIONS STARTING AUGUST 29, 2012 — Wed. 6-8p 169<\/p>\n

Instructors: Suzanne Terrio, Ed.M.,MA,CSC,CIC<\/p>\n

Co-Taught by LeRoy Terrio, DEAF<\/p>\n

Students will learn the parameters of ASL, such as handshapes, spatial
\nrelationships, two-handed vs. one handed signs, palm orientation,
\nfacial grammar, non-manual markers, speed and intensity of signs and
\nhow it affects meaning.<\/p>\n

Students will experience aspects of Deaf Culture, such as having a name
\nsign, hand-waving to call attention, where it is appropriate and how to
\ntap a deaf person to establish eye contact for face-to- face
\ncommunication.<\/p>\n

This introductory course will clear up myths and misconceptions many
\npeople have toward ASL and Deaf people. In just 5 weeks, students will
\nknow how to: <\/p>\n

Communicate with a Deaf person through gestures, simple signs, and the
\ninterpreting process;<\/p>\n

Use basic “WH” questions–Who, What, Where, How, When, Why
\nApply simple grammatical rules such as noun and adjective placement
\nReceptively and expressively use ASL pronouns; signs for family
\nmembers; signs for common household objects and furnishings; and basic
\nnoun verb pairs, such as sit vs. chair, scissors vs. cut
\nIdentify compound signs, which require more than two-hand shapes, such
\nas brother or sister.<\/p>\n
