In<br \/>\nthis workshop, you will achieve a fundamental understanding of what<br \/>\nlinguistics is and how it relates to you, as well as, discover the<br \/>\nvalue of linguistics in your professional and educational career. This<br \/>\nworkshop, Fundamentals of Linguistics: How Does It Apply to Me?, will<br \/>\nprimarily focus on three main areas of linguistic inquiry: phonology,<br \/>\nmorphology, and syntax.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Deibert: M.A., Interdisciplinary Studies Emphasis: English<br \/>\nand American Sign Language; Texas BEI Level II; Currently adjunct<br \/>\nprofessor for TJC ITP focusing on ASL, Intra Lingual Skills Development<br \/>\nand Interpreting Labs.<\/p>\n<p>Rubrics<br \/>\nParticipants will be exposed to the concept of grading rubrics for use<br \/>\nby educators in Interpreter Training Programs and for self and peer<br \/>\nevaluation by practitioners. Participants will learn how to create and<br \/>\ncustomize rubrics for use for their specific needs. They will also<br \/>\npractice using sample rubrics to evaluate selected sources. Deaf Education; Texas State Certified Teacher for the Deaf<br \/>\n( K-12); Texas BEI Level III Intermediary Interpreter; TASC-ASL &#8211; ASL<br \/>\ncertified instructor; Workshop Presenter; On numerous boards and<br \/>\ncommittees; Retired Deaf Ed.Teacher with 30 years experience;<br \/>\nPreviously taught at Del Mar College ITP in Corpus Christi,TX.<br \/>\nCurrently also a TJC ITP adjunct professor focusing on Deaf Culture,<br \/>\nFingerspelling, &#038; Visual Gestural Communication.<\/p>\n<p>Visual Descriptors<br \/>\nVisual Descriptors in ASL will focus on how to use multimodal approach<br \/>\nusing a variety visual descriptor tools in ASL such as pronouns,<br \/>\ncontrastive structures, spatial verbs, classifiers, and other ASL<br \/>\ngrammatical features to describe visual elements from a video or<br \/>\npicture clip. This approach will give participants the experience using<br \/>\ntheir receptive and expressive visual ASL skills<\/p>\n<p>Laura Loeb Hill: M.S. Deaf Education; Texas BEI Level V Intermediary<br \/>\nInterpreter; TASC-ASL certified instructor; Has been teaching ASL since<br \/>\n1992 at HS and\/or College levels; Over 13 years Deaf Ed. teaching<br \/>\nexperience; Currently the ASL professor at TJC\u2019s ITP focusing on<br \/>\noverseeing the ASL courses.<\/p>\n<p>English Idioms\/ASL Phrases<br \/>\nHow hard is it to sign idioms? Have you heard of idioms but can\u2019t<br \/>\nfigure out how to sign it?? This workshop will allow you to brainstorm<br \/>\nideas of how to sign idioms. Participants will work in groups and use<br \/>\ntheir brains to figure out how to sign familiar idioms in ASL. The<br \/>\npresenter will show the participants how to sign certain idioms. Get<br \/>\nready to use your brains for this fun workshop<\/p>\n<p>Rhonda McKinzie: BS Deaf ED; MS Counseling; Licensed Professional<br \/>\nCounselor; Texas BEI Master\/Court certified interpreter; Over 32 years<br \/>\ncertified interpreter experience; workshop presenter; currently Dept.<br \/>\nChair for TJC\u2019s ITP.<\/p>\n<p>Brain Gym Exercises, Self-Care to Prevent Burnout and Injury &#038;<br \/>\nInterpreters Working Lunch Brain Gym\u00ae movements, exercises, or<br \/>\nactivities: Series of movements &#8211; coordinating the eyes, ears, hands,<br \/>\nand whole body. Brain Gym was developed by educator and reading<br \/>\nspecialist Paul E. Dennison and his wife and colleague, Gail E.<br \/>\nDennison. We have used these activities in our interpreting program to<br \/>\nincrease concentration and focus. Brain Gym activities are said to<br \/>\nimprove memory. academics, test taking, physical coordination,<br \/>\norganizational skills, attitude and more. Many schools and day care<br \/>\nprograms as well as counseling programs incorporate these activities.<br \/>\nWe do some activities at the beginning of the day and after lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Using both sides of the brain through these activities attendees will:<\/p>\n<p>Increase concentration\/focus<br \/>\nIncrease energy and awareness<\/p>\n<p>Self-Care: Interpreters, teachers and students all need to understand<br \/>\nhow to care for ourselves to prevent burnout and injury. Some basic<br \/>\nconcepts will be discussed in this portion of the workshop. During this<br \/>\n30 minute session we will cover stress\u2019s affects on our work and some<br \/>\nthings we can do to improve nutrition, attitude, thoughts, rest,<br \/>\nmovement, posture and more. Be prepared to do a self-assessment in<br \/>\nthese areas to see where you are doing things well!<\/p>\n<p>Working Lunch: Each interpreting table will be given an ethical<br \/>\nscenario to discuss during lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Grona, adjunct professor from TJC\u2019s ITP who teaches ASL I and<br \/>\nII.
