Target Audience: Two In One Workshop \u2013 For HS and College ASL Teachers
\nas well as Interpreters or Interpreting<\/p>\n

Workshop\/Course Description: Attendees will be combined in the
\nbeginning and at the end of the day.<\/p>\n

Each group will move between two rooms to participate in the following
\ntopics presented specifically for each group\u2019s perspective (teaching
\nASL or working as an interpreter):<\/p>\n

* Using Rubrics for Self and Peer Evaluations in ASL Classes and
\nInterpreting
\n* English Idioms and ASL Phrases
\n* Visual Descriptors
\n* Fundamentals of Linguistics and How It Applies To Me
\n* Self-Care\/Brain Gym Exercises- help students learn and help
\ninterpreters work smarter and safer<\/p>\n

Working Lunch: Teachers- be prepared to share activities and ideas for
\nteaching ASL;<\/p>\n

Interpreters will work on Ethical Dilemmas. Boxed lunches provided.<\/p>\n

Casey Crouch: Graduate of Tyler Jr. College\u2019s ITP; Undergraduate
\nUniversity Study and Immersion Experience with Concentrations in
\nAmerican Sign Language and Linguistics- Gallaudet University; Currently
\nTJC ITP\u2019s Lab Assistant and Adjunct Professor.<\/p>\n

Fundamentals of Linguistics: How Does It Apply to Me?
\n\u201cWhat is linguistics and how does it apply to me?\u201d As teachers,
\ninterpreters, or students, you may be asking yourself this question. In
\nthis workshop, you will achieve a fundamental understanding of what
\nlinguistics is and how it relates to you, as well as, discover the
\nvalue of linguistics in your professional and educational career. This
\nworkshop, Fundamentals of Linguistics: How Does It Apply to Me?, will
\nprimarily focus on three main areas of linguistic inquiry: phonology,
\nmorphology, and syntax.<\/p>\n

Stephanie Deibert: M.A., Interdisciplinary Studies Emphasis: English
\nand American Sign Language; Texas BEI Level II; Currently adjunct
\nprofessor for TJC ITP focusing on ASL, Intra Lingual Skills Development
\nand Interpreting Labs.<\/p>\n

Rubrics
\nParticipants will be exposed to the concept of grading rubrics for use
\nby educators in Interpreter Training Programs and for self and peer
\nevaluation by practitioners. Participants will learn how to create and
\ncustomize rubrics for use for their specific needs. They will also
\npractice using sample rubrics to evaluate selected sources. Susie
\nGrona: B.S. Deaf Education; Texas State Certified Teacher for the Deaf
\n( K-12); Texas BEI Level III Intermediary Interpreter; TASC-ASL – ASL
\ncertified instructor; Workshop Presenter; On numerous boards and
\ncommittees; Retired Deaf Ed.Teacher with 30 years experience;
\nPreviously taught at Del Mar College ITP in Corpus Christi,TX.
\nCurrently also a TJC ITP adjunct professor focusing on Deaf Culture,
\nFingerspelling, & Visual Gestural Communication.<\/p>\n

Visual Descriptors
\nVisual Descriptors in ASL will focus on how to use multimodal approach
\nusing a variety visual descriptor tools in ASL such as pronouns,
\ncontrastive structures, spatial verbs, classifiers, and other ASL
\ngrammatical features to describe visual elements from a video or
\npicture clip. This approach will give participants the experience using
\ntheir receptive and expressive visual ASL skills<\/p>\n

Laura Loeb Hill: M.S. Deaf Education; Texas BEI Level V Intermediary
\nInterpreter; TASC-ASL certified instructor; Has been teaching ASL since
\n1992 at HS and\/or College levels; Over 13 years Deaf Ed. teaching
\nexperience; Currently the ASL professor at TJC\u2019s ITP focusing on
\noverseeing the ASL courses.<\/p>\n

English Idioms\/ASL Phrases
\nHow hard is it to sign idioms? Have you heard of idioms but can\u2019t
\nfigure out how to sign it?? This workshop will allow you to brainstorm
\nideas of how to sign idioms. Participants will work in groups and use
\ntheir brains to figure out how to sign familiar idioms in ASL. The
\npresenter will show the participants how to sign certain idioms. Get
\nready to use your brains for this fun workshop<\/p>\n

Rhonda McKinzie: BS Deaf ED; MS Counseling; Licensed Professional
\nCounselor; Texas BEI Master\/Court certified interpreter; Over 32 years
\ncertified interpreter experience; workshop presenter; currently Dept.
\nChair for TJC\u2019s ITP.<\/p>\n

Brain Gym Exercises, Self-Care to Prevent Burnout and Injury &
\nInterpreters Working Lunch Brain Gym\u00ae movements, exercises, or
\nactivities: Series of movements – coordinating the eyes, ears, hands,
\nand whole body. Brain Gym was developed by educator and reading
\nspecialist Paul E. Dennison and his wife and colleague, Gail E.
\nDennison. We have used these activities in our interpreting program to
\nincrease concentration and focus. Brain Gym activities are said to
\nimprove memory. academics, test taking, physical coordination,
\norganizational skills, attitude and more. Many schools and day care
\nprograms as well as counseling programs incorporate these activities.
\nWe do some activities at the beginning of the day and after lunch.<\/p>\n

Using both sides of the brain through these activities attendees will:<\/p>\n

Increase concentration\/focus
\nIncrease energy and awareness<\/p>\n

Self-Care: Interpreters, teachers and students all need to understand
\nhow to care for ourselves to prevent burnout and injury. Some basic
\nconcepts will be discussed in this portion of the workshop. During this
\n30 minute session we will cover stress\u2019s affects on our work and some
\nthings we can do to improve nutrition, attitude, thoughts, rest,
\nmovement, posture and more. Be prepared to do a self-assessment in
\nthese areas to see where you are doing things well!<\/p>\n

Working Lunch: Each interpreting table will be given an ethical
\nscenario to discuss during lunch.<\/p>\n

Patrick Grona, adjunct professor from TJC\u2019s ITP who teaches ASL I and
\nII. He is also a retired Deaf Ed. teacher and coach of over 30 years.
