The Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services has
\npartnered with the Department of State Health Services and Department
\nof Aging and Disability Services to produce two American Sign Language
\nvideos about West Nile Virus Prevention measures.<\/p>\n

The Texas Department of State Health Services urges people to take
\nprecautions to reduce the risk of contracting West Nile virus, a
\nmosquito borne illness. People should use insect repellent when
\noutdoors and avoid going outside at dusk and dawn. There has been a
\nhigher than usual number of human West Nile cases in Texas this year
\ndue to the warm winter and recent rains, particularly in the North
\nTexas region.<\/p>\n

WEST NILE VIRUS MESSAGES<\/p>\n

The Department of State Health Services has asked Health and Human
\nService agencies to disseminate the following messages:<\/p>\n

PREVENTION<\/p>\n

Take the following precautions:<\/p>\n

* Use an approved insect repellent every time you go outside and follow
\nthe instructions on the label. Approved repellents are those that
\ncontain DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
\n* Regularly drain standing water, including water that collects in
\nempty cans, tires, buckets, clogged rain gutters, and saucers under
\npotted plants. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water.
\n* Wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most
\nactive.
\n* Use air conditioning or make sure there are screens on all doors and
\nwindows to keep mosquitoes from entering the home.
\n* Texans who are elderly and those with chronic medical conditions or
\ncompromised immune systems are more vulnerable to developing West Nile
\nillness if they are bitten by an infected mosquito.
\n* There is no effective treatment for West Nile Virus illnesses, so
\nit\u2019s important to prevent mosquito bites.<\/p>\n

COMMUNITY<\/p>\n

* Help neighbors who are elderly, have disabilities or access and
\nfunctional needs to repair their windows or door screens to keep
\nmosquitoes out and with other precautions to reduce their risk of
\nbecoming ill.
\n* Also remember other Texans with access or functional needs in your
\ncommunities who may need assistance in reducing their risk of illness.<\/p>\n

SPRAYING ACTIVITY<\/p>\n

* The majority of Dallas county areas are performing enhanced
\nground-based spraying.
\n* There will be aerial spraying over a large area of Dallas County
\nduring the next few days.
\n* Aerial spraying is a very effective and safe way to kill adult
\nmosquitoes in large, densely populated areas.
\n* We understand that many people have concerns about exposure during
\naerial spraying; for those people, health officials suggest the
\nfollowing precautions:
\n* Minimize exposure. Avoid being outside, close windows, and consider
\nkeeping pets inside while spraying occurs.
\n* If skin or clothes are exposed, wash them with soap and water.
\n* Rinse homegrown fruits and vegetables with water as a general
\nprecautionary measure.
\n* Cover small ornamental fish ponds.<\/p>\n

Because the chemical breaks down quickly in sunlight and water, no
\nspecial precautions are suggested for outdoor swimming areas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
