A concept expressed in<br \/>\nan ASL sign often cannot be conveyed by a single all-purpose English<br \/>\nword. Likewise, English words and phrases may have variations in<br \/>\nmeaning, which require translations using different ASL signs. This<br \/>\nworkshop helps the student advance skills in translating the languages<br \/>\nof ASL and English. This workshop will guide participants in expressing<br \/>\nidiomatic concepts across languages. Idioms breathe life into language.<br \/>\nCome and join us as we master idioms!<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 29, 2012 ~ Saturday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cFace-Painting\u201d with Non Manual Signals in ASL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Non-manual signals (NMS) in American Sign Language enrich and clarify<br \/>\nthe meaning of manual signs. Come and learn the art of painting your<br \/>\nface with a full spectrum of NMS colors and designs. Non-Manual Signals<br \/>\ninclude: 1) Non-Manual Adverbs 2) Lexical Non-Manual Behaviors 3)<br \/>\nNon-Manual Grammatical Markers 4) Emotional States \/ Evaluative<br \/>\njudgments 5) Prosodic Structure 6) Discourse Structure 7) Turn Taking<br \/>\n8) Backchannel Feedback 9) Grammatical \u201cSound\u201d Markers, and 10) Mouth<br \/>\nMovements. This workshop will focus on developing accurate non-manual<br \/>\nsignals and markers as used in ASL. Demonstrations of each category of<br \/>\nfacial behaviors and head movements will be shown in context. Practice<br \/>\nexercises will be offered. Trix&#8217;s work has been warmly received everywhere, from local<br \/>\ncommunity centers, to state, regional and national conferences, Deaf<br \/>\nWay II, interpreter conventions and more. Wildly popular as a teacher<br \/>\nof ASL storytelling and ASL interpretation, Trix impresses audiences at<br \/>\nall levels of ASL skill, from novices to fluent experts. Trix has been<br \/>\nprofoundly deaf since she was 6 months old. She went through oral,<br \/>\nmainstreaming, deaf classes, and online educational programs. Trix has<br \/>\nbeen involved in the performing arts since 1980. After completing her<br \/>\ncollege program, she became involved with interpreter training.
