ASL Semantics: Precision of Expression in ASL<\/strong><\/p>\n

Semantics is defined as the study of meanings expressed by the elements
\nof a language or a combination of the elements. A concept expressed in
\nan ASL sign often cannot be conveyed by a single all-purpose English
\nword. Likewise, English words and phrases may have variations in
\nmeaning, which require translations using different ASL signs. This
\nworkshop helps the student advance skills in translating the languages
\nof ASL and English. (Demonstration of Semantics: RUN)<\/p>\n

Fire up your creativity and learn how to interpret idioms in American
\nSign Language! This workshop will guide participants in expressing
\nidiomatic concepts across languages. Idioms breathe life into language.

\u201cFace-Painting\u201d with Non Manual Signals in ASL<\/strong><\/p>\n

Non-manual signals (NMS) in American Sign Language enrich and clarify
\nthe meaning of manual signs. Come and learn the art of painting your
\nface with a full spectrum of NMS colors and designs. Non-Manual Signals
\ninclude: 1) Non-Manual Adverbs 2) Lexical Non-Manual Behaviors 3)
\nNon-Manual Grammatical Markers 4) Emotional States \/ Evaluative
\njudgments 5) Prosodic Structure 6) Discourse Structure 7) Turn Taking
\n8) Backchannel Feedback 9) Grammatical \u201cSound\u201d Markers, and 10) Mouth
\nMovements. This workshop will focus on developing accurate non-manual
\nsignals and markers as used in ASL. Demonstrations of each category of
\nfacial behaviors and head movements will be shown in context. Practice
\nexercises will be offered. By the end of this workshop, you\u2019ll be an
\nartist! (Demonstration of Classifier Storytelling: Camping Fire)<\/p>\n

BIO: Patricia (Trix) Bruce, from Seattle, Washington, is known
\nnationwide as both a workshop presenter and an American Sign Language
\nperformer. Trix’s work has been warmly received everywhere, from local
\ncommunity centers, to state, regional and national conferences, Deaf
\nWay II, interpreter conventions and more. Wildly popular as a teacher
\nof ASL storytelling and ASL interpretation, Trix impresses audiences at
\nall levels of ASL skill, from novices to fluent experts. Trix has been
\nprofoundly deaf since she was 6 months old. She went through oral,
\nmainstreaming, deaf classes, and online educational programs. Trix has
\nbeen involved in the performing arts since 1980. After completing her
\ncollege program, she became involved with interpreter training. Trix’s
\nmain area of study has been ASL Linguistics with a focus on ASL
