Cibolo Municipal Court Judge Marion T. Carson is gaining attention as he is believed to be the only totally deaf presiding judge in the state of Texas. Despite his disabilities following a 2000 car accident, Judge Carson is still making plenty of noise as he continues to operate a successful courtroom in the neighboring community.

Carson who had to adapt to using sign language and reading lips says 99 percent of the time, the defendants preparing to plead their cases don’t know that he is deaf. Assisting in his courtroom duties are two hearing aids, and a state-of-the-art captioning system that transforms courtroom talk into text. The text is then displayed on a computer screen making it readable for the judge. Cibolo officials say they don’t have any regrets on appointing Judge Carson to the bench. They say the 70-year-old judge has done nothing but proved his credentials and has shown that his impairment is not affecting his courtroom duties.

In fact, city leaders say communities throughout the state continue to watch Carson’s techniques and effectiveness as he looks at the defendants straight in the eyes and asks that they speak clearly so he can read their lips. Judge Carson can be found fast at work at the Cibolo Municipal Court every second and fourth Thursday of each month.

——————————————————————————-
You are subscribed to the following list:
Deaf Network of Texas

using the following email:
blog@deafnetwork.com

You may automatically unsubscribe from this list at any time by
visiting the following URL:

<http ://www.deafnetwork.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/u/dn/>

BETTER IP RELAY – EVERYWHERE! i711.com makes all your relay calls better.
