AUSTIN, TX- December 3, 2012. The Texas Association of the Deaf (TAD) and Davideo Productions are proud to announce the release of its 54-minute documentary film entitled JOURNEY THROUGH DEAF TEXAS on DVD. The film chronicles the history of TAD since its inception in 1886 and features archival photos, motion picture film footage and interviews with past TAD presidents. It\u2019s presented in American Sign Language, open subtitles, and background music.<\/p>\n

This film took more than two years to produce and was made possible through a grant from the Travis County Council of the Deaf and subsequent funding from TAD. The film was co-produced, directed, and edited by David H. Pierce, chief executive officer of Davideo Productions based in Seguin, Texas. The film has been exhibited in theaters and during various community events targeting deaf and hard of hearing consumers.<\/p>\n

Stephen C. Baldwin, Ph.D., past president of TAD, co-producer, writer, and researcher of the film, says that \u201cthe film highlights some of TAD\u2019s historic accomplishments that have had an impact on deaf and hard of hearing Texans. The film is not all about politics and legislative endeavors, but has sentimental moments about leadership, failures, triumphs, ignorance, and apathy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Larry D. Evans, president of TAD and board member of National Association of the Deaf (NAD), says \u201cinterpreting rights, educational rights and communication equivalence are just three of the many chronic issues facing TAD. The film shows different strategies on how the TAD addressed those issues and is a good educational tool for consumers and legislators to learn about ways to make lives better for deaf and hard of hearing people.\u201d<\/p>\n

A study guide will be made available upon request to students and teachers of social studies, Deaf studies, communication applications, American Sign Language classes and interpreter training programs. The guide complies with most state curricula requirements and lists suggested activities and evaluations.<\/p>\n

Texas Association of the Deaf (TAD) is a non-profit organization safeguarding the rights of persons who are deaf and hard of hearing. Promoting leadership, growth and equality continue to be the primary goals of TAD. It has addressed the social, linguistic and cultural needs for this population since 1886.
