Stein, a recent graduate of
Harvard Law School and currently a law clerk for the Honorable
William G. Young in the United States District Court for the District
of Massachusetts, has been selected by the prestigious Skadden
Fellowship Foundation as one of 29 distinguished 2007 Skadden
Fellows.

This fellowship award enables Stein to join the NAD Law and Advocacy
Center in September 2007 as staff attorney, with a focus on
increasing accessibility of medical and legal services for deaf and
hard of hearing people.

The Skadden Fellowship Foundation has been described as “a legal
Peace Corps” by The Los Angeles Times. The Foundation was established
in 1988 to commemorate the firm’s 40th anniversary, in recognition of
the need for greater funding for graduating law students who wish to
devote their professional lives to providing legal services to the
unrepresented and underrepresented. The Foundation also gives Fellows
the freedom to pursue public interest work, providing each Fellow with
salary and benefits to which an employee of the sponsoring
organization would be entitled. Fellowships are awarded for one year,
with the expectation of renewal for a second year, and are based upon
each applicant’s academic performance, demonstrated commitment to the
public interest, and the quality of his or her project.

A native of Maplewood, New Jersey, Stein graduated from Princeton in
2003 and from Harvard Law School in 2006. At Harvard Law School, he
was Notes Editor of the Harvard Law Review and published a comment on
captioning in movie theaters. He worked as a student advocate at the
Hale and Dorr Legal Services Center representing clients on Social
Security and housing issues. Stein also spent his summers as an
intern at the U.S. Department of Justice and as a summer associate at
the Covington & Burling law firm in Washington, DC.

“We are delighted that Michael has received a Skadden Fellowship and
that he has decided to work with us,” said Rosaline Crawford, the
Director of the NAD Law and Advocacy Center. “Michael, as an attorney
who is deaf, will strengthen our commitment to quality legal
representation and advocacy to ensure equal access for deaf and hard
of hearing individuals. We look forward to Michael joining our legal
staff.”

The NAD previously had two other staff attorneys as Skadden Fellows
at the NAD \u0013 Mary Vargas in 1998 and Claudia Gordon in 2000. Both
worked with the NAD for two years.

About the NAD

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD), founded in 1880,
safeguards the civil rights of deaf and hard of hearing Americans.
