Buddy, the soldier’s little brother, refuses to believe what seems inevitable. Told through the visual poetry of sign language, Tuc, the town’s Deaf postman shares the story of one community struggling to make sense of a world at war.

Written by Suzan Zeder, nationally acclaimed playwright for family audiences, The Edge of Peace takes us on a journey through a pivotal time in American History. With the men of Ware, Illinois, away on the battlefield, those remaining must juggle their emotions of fear, loss and hope while living with limited resources. Not allowed to serve in the military, the central character of Tuc finds new opportunities open to him at this time. Both postman and mechanic for Ware, he is offered a position at Goodyear in Akron, Ohio. Tuc finds himself at a life-changing crossroads. Will he remain in Ware? Or does he leave his much-loved hometown for the chance to be part of the thriving Deaf community of Akron?

Our production of this moving story is produced in partnership with Seattle Children’s Theatre (SCT) and is directed by SCT’s artistic director Linda Hartzell. Comprised of both Seattle and Austin-based actors, the cast includes Deaf actor Robert Schleifer in the role of Tuc. Mr. Schleifer has appeared on stage at many prominent national theaters, including Steppenwolf Theatre and Goodman Theatre. In the role of Tuc, Schleifer signs throughout the play. Another actor performs the role of Voice, Tuc’s alter ego and presence in the hearing community.

This play is part of a trilogy of plays including Mother Hicks and The Taste of Sunrise, which have been performed for Deaf and Hearing audiences throughout the United States. Playwright Zeder worked extensively with Deaf artists including Billy Seago and faculty and students of Gallaudet University to create all three plays that occupy a very special place in the canon of dramatic literature featuring vibrant Deaf characters.

Performances are on February 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, and 9 at 8:00 p.m. and February 3 and 10 at 2:00 p.m. We are pleased to present ASL Interpreted performances on February 3 and 9.

We will be glad to offer a discounted rate for groups of 15 or greater. Recommended for audiences age ten and older, the play includes some violence and dark images pertaining to war. I am mailing you hard copy cards you are welcome to share with your colleagues and students.

Please feel free to contact me for more information by calling 512-232-5301 or email gholston@austin.utexas.edu.
