Texas Monthly recently suggested that Austin is the most segregated city in Texas. True or not, there\u2019s never a bad time to reaffirm the love of knowledge unifying all nerds. This month\u2019s speakers will remind us why every month is black history month.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe (R)Evolution Of Malcolm X,\u201d by Lashonda Lester<\/p>\n

Even though everyone knows the name Malcolm X, his extraordinary story is not as well known as other dynamic Black history icons. Lashonda will discuss Malcolm\u2019s early life in the rural midwest, adventures as a Harlem hustler, incarceration and rapid rise to fame as a radical minster for the controversial Nation Of Islam, and his evolution into a powerful civil rights leader.<\/p>\n

Lashonda Lester is an Austin based stand-up comedian and the creator\/host\/producer of Weird! True Hollywood Tales; a biography\/pop culture series focusing on tragic or weird deaths of notable celebrities from the 20th century.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfrican Americans and U.S. Navy Diving: A Legacy of Performance Under Pressure,\u201d by Fred McGhee<\/p>\n

Dr. McGhee will provide a short history of U.S. Navy Diving as well as African Americans in the U.S. Navy, himself included.<\/p>\n

Fred L. McGhee is an Austin based environmental, archaeological, and sustainability consultant. He is one of the first African American diving officers in Navy history and is the author of the recently published \u201cTwo Texas Race Riots.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Lives of Blacks in Texas 1950-2010,\u201d by Dr. Shetal Vohra-Gupta, Dr. Jemel Aguilar, and Jennifer Alexander<\/p>\n

The African American population of Texas has undergone significant changes over the past several decades. Considering these demographic changes through a racial lens can help inform future Texas governmental policies.<\/p>\n

Dr. Vohra-Gupta, Dr. Aguilar and Jennifer Alexander are researchers with the UT Institute for Urban Policy Research & Analysis, a non-partisan think-tank committed to applying data to inform legislative policies affecting the quality of life of multiple populations of color.<\/p>\n
