Fort Worth Introduces Emergency Alert System for the Deaf and Blind<\/strong><\/p>\n

FORT WORTH \u2014 As we roll toward severe weather season, Fort Worth is rolling out a new warning system. It will make sure those who can\u2019t see or hear the warnings still know about them.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople who can hear, they know what to do, but I\u2019m deaf,\u201d said Fort Worth\u2019s Tracey Michol. \u201cI was born deaf. Profoundly deaf.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to U.S. Census numbers, 5-percent of those living in Fort Worth have hearing or vision disabilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have hearing aids. I hear some noise, but I don\u2019t know where it\u2019s coming from,\u201d said Michol.<\/p>\n

Thursday afternoon, Fort Worth introduced the Accessible Hazard Alert System (AHAS). Alert will now be sent out as video messages in American Sign Language as well as braille.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe city will now send out our AHAS warnings at the same time that the rest of us hear our outdoor warning sirens,\u201d said Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price.<\/p>\n

Fort Worth is the first city in Texas to offer the program.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope that we can be an inspiration to other communities, other cities, that maybe they\u2019ll do the same,\u201d said Michol.<\/p>\n
