In Loving Memory of Dr. Nathie Marbury<\/p>\n

We are sad to announce the passing of a valued ACC employee, Nathie Marbury, Professor with the American Sign Language-Interpreter Training department at the Rio Grande campus. Nathie<\/span> passed away on Monday, April 15, 2013.<\/p>\n

Nathie<\/span> joined ACC on July 5, 1999 The programs that Nathie supported will dearly miss her wonderful smile and enthusiasm for teaching. She was professional and had a committed dedication to the students that will be greatly missed by all.<\/p>\n

At this time funeral information is not available, when we receive this information, we will send out a notice. Please keep Nathie’s family in your thoughts and prayers.<\/p>\n

NATHIE MARBURY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nathie<\/span> was born in Grenada, MS in 1944 but grew up in Pennsylvania. She graduated from the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in 1962. In 1975, she earned her Bachelor’s degree from Gallaudet University and her two Master’s degrees from California State University at Northridge (CSUN) in 1976.<\/p>\n

Nathie<\/span> completed her doctoral coursework in applied linguistics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She completed her doctorate in Deaf studies\/Deaf education during the fall of 2007 at Lamar University.<\/p>\n

Nathie<\/span> became the first Black deaf woman to enter the National Leadership Training Program for the Deaf at California State University, Northridge. She was also the first Black deaf female instructor at the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School for the Deaf, 1978-1986.<\/p>\n

Nathie<\/span> had conducted numerous workshops and seminars all over the United States and Canada. She had taught Deaf and hearing students throughout the United States at schools for the deaf, universities\/colleges, and community colleges over the last 35 years. She had made a variety videotapes for several companies over the last 25 years. Nathie<\/span> taught primarily ASL classes at Austin Community College (Austin, TX).<\/p>\n

Nathie<\/span> was one of American Sign Language & Interpreter Training (ASLIT) staff. Nathie<\/span> was 2007 Laurent Clerc Award winner. Nathie<\/span> was a longtime supporter and member of the National Alliance of Black Interpreters Inc. (NAOBI) and a National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Board member (2006-2008). Nathie<\/span> was the great Black Deaf Comedian\/Entertainer.<\/p>\n

In this full-length documentary, Nathie told stories about her upbringing in Pittsburgh, where she “sang” in the church choir. At the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, her white classmates actually tried to rub off her blackness. When she attended Gallaudet University, she tried out for the football team. She became a mother of two and a grandmother of five, but she didn’t really find her identity as a Black Deaf woman until later in her life. In Nathie: No Hand-Me-Downs, she shared stories and observations, all rich with humor and insights on the human condition. And available for home viewing for the first time where her powerful and majestic American Sign Language poems. Extras included twenty minutes of deleted stories, biographies, and trailers. The entire documentary is subtitled (and voiced) for the signing-impaired.<\/em><\/p>\n
