It is clear that the influx of research activity is a very positive sign, as the evidence we collect can improve VRS interpreting for all stakeholders. Collecting data about VRS interpreting allows us to improve our effectiveness as interpreters, increase our job satisfaction, and contribute to company policies and growth within this setting.

This study, Interpreter Burnout in VRS, builds upon the evidence collected recently by Dawn Wessling (Emotional Extremes in VRS Interpreting) and Kathryn Bower (Stress and Burnout in VRS Interpreting). As with these other studies, we do not ask for VRS company affiliations, nor do we ask you to reveal any information that is confidential or proprietary. We also do not ask for your names or any other identifiable information. We have tried to respect your time investment by not replicating questions you responded to in other studies, yet you might see a few questions that are similar. Thank you again for your faithfulness in contributing to these projects and for taking your time to complete this survey.

About this study:
The purpose of this study is to evaluate and identify the perceived symptoms of burnout experienced by VRS interpreters. The study will determine what aspects of burnout predict interpreters’ levels of job satisfaction, and will also analyze how burnout affects interpreter retention in VRS environments.

In order to participate, you must be 18 or older and have experience working in VRS settings. If you choose to participate, completing the survey should take approximately 20-30 minutes. All information obtained in this study is anonymous and will be used for research purposes only. There are no foreseeable risks to participating in this study. The Institutional Review Board at the University of North Florida has approved the protocol used throughout this study in its entirety (project number 403714-3).

Please feel free to contact me, Heidi J. Gerlosky or my research advisor, Dr. Sherry Shaw, if you have any further questions.

Thank you again,

Heidi J. Gerlosky
B.S.
