Join us for the 3rd Annual Heroes for Hearing celebration featuring Celebrity Guest Speaker, Academy Award Winning Actress Marlee Matlin benefiting the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Marlee Matlin received worldwide acclaim for her motion picture debut in Paramount Pictures\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Children of a Lesser God,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d earning her the Academy Award of the Best Actress, making her one of only four actresses to receive that honor for a film debut. Since then, Matlin has starred in numerous feature films. On TV, Matlin made her debut starring opposite Lee Remick, in CBS\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Bridge to Silence,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a film that marked her first speaking role. The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center began in 1978 as The Corpus Christi Area Council for the Deaf, Inc., when a group of passionate people came together to provide services for people with hearing loss in the Coastal Bend. The agency is a full service, non-profit 502(c) (3) organization providing a wide variety of client services as needed. With your help we can continue to accomplish our mission to alleviate communication barriers and strive for equal access for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
\nThe Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center has valuable resources for all individuals who have hearing loss and their families. Our services include parent and family support, a HUH (Help Us Hear) Group, Assistive Listening Devices and STAP program, Job Training and Placement program, Case work service, and Educational Programs including sign language classes, baby sign classes, literacy classes, and sign language camp for kids. Moreover, we provide weekly education and recreational events with a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Silver Silent Seniors\u00e2\u20ac\u009d program, recreation services for all ages year-round with North of the Border Games for the Deaf, Deaf Awareness Week and Summer Voyage, a camp for students with hearing loss. Our Communiqu\u00c3\u00a8 Caf\u00c3\u00a8 offers a work training program at an in-house snack bar. We provide video rely services booths, information and referral, communication services like interpreter services, note-takers and CART transcription, and substance abuse group services free of charge.
