She was an amazing woman and even more amazing mother and grandmother.

Lottie was born on February 5, 1917 somewhere in the woods of Louisiana. The nearest town was Sikes, La. She was born to Lott and Maggie Hinton, one of eight children. At about the age of 6 she contracted mumps and lost her hearing. The last words she remembered hearing was her mother swatting at a fly and shouting “Shoo fly!” After those words she heard no more. For 3 years she remained on the farm helping with chores and learning cooking and sewing from her mother; she learned both very well. Her parents sought every means they knew to help their daughter, including doctors and faith healers, but to no avail. One day a traveling salesman told the parents about the school for the Deaf in Baton Rouge. This opened the doors to a full and satisfying life. The Louisiana School for the Deaf became the foundation as well as the love of her life. The memories of the school and the fun, lessons and activities never left her and even in her last days she reflected on those days.

In 1942 she met and married Francis Sevier who had completed school at Texas School for the Deaf. As was common in those days they had a small private ceremony then announced to the parents, ”I’m bringing someone special home”.

Fortunately each was truly special and the parents and in laws was just fine. They subsequently had two boys, Coy and Sam Sevier. Mom was a very energetic worker and worked in several of the “sewing factories” of Dallas, always loved by her managers and coworkers. She spent the last 10 years of her career working with the children at Stonewall Jackson Elementary School as a teacher’s aide and advocate for the deaf children. She retired and lived in Dallas until her declining years when she moved to Sulphur Springs at the urging of her children. She sorely missed her deaf community.

Lottie and Francis were very active in the Dallas and state deaf community. They served in many varied offices for the various organizations and their social life exceeded that of any other parents I knew. As children we have many wonderful memories of deaf friends, many with hearing children with whom we sheared great memories. As her children we were always so proud of mom and Dad and their life and accomplishments. The great determination and energy they exhibited in living with what many had perceived as a “handicap” was no handicap to Lottie and Francis. They simply worked harder and enjoyed more with the community they loved so much. “Deaf Pride” had met its early beginnings.

Admired more than any thing was the warm and wonderful spirit exuded by both Mom and Dad toward their grandchildren but also felt and admired by all who knew them. As is common with so many parents they probably had little concept of what “parenting” was all about, but their spirits and lives taught their sons and grandchildren the most important things of life. We rise up and call them blessed. Lottie was preceded in death by her husband Francis. She is survive by her sons: Coy Sevier and wife Joyce of New Boston, Texas and Sam Sevier and wife Sher of Sulphur Springs, Texas. Six adoring grandchildren and 10 Great grandchildren also survive.

Services will be on Sunday, September 22 at Grove Hill Memorial Chapel in Dallas at 2:00pm.

No formal visitation, open visitation preceding the funeral from 1 to 2 pm.

In Lieu of Flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Dallas Community Center of the Deaf, 4215 Maple Ave, Dallas, Texas 75219 in memory of Francis and Lottie Sevier.

Service Information

Visitation
Sunday, September 22, 2013
12:00pm – 2:00pm

Grove Hill Funeral Home
3920 Samuell Blvd
Dallas, TX 75228
(214) 388-8887

Funeral Service
Sunday, September 22, 2013
2:00pm – 3:00pm

Grove Hill Funeral Home
3920 Samuell Blvd
Dallas, TX 75228
(214) 388-8887

SOURCE:

http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=LOTTIE-SEVIER&lc=2201&pid=167029928&mid=5671310

LOTTIE LEE SEVIER February 5, 1917 – September 18, 2013 Lottie Lee (Hinton) Sevier completed her long and well lived life journey on September 18, 2013 when her tired and well used body finally had enough.
