\n\tAlaina has worked as an interpreter since 1989 in a variety of interpreting settings including medical, legal, mental health, educational, video-relay, and many others. She has taught as Texas Woman’s University and Tarrant County College, and has served as a mentor for over 15 years.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t“How Did I Get Here?: Using and Understanding Transitions in ASL”<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tHave you ever found yourself being not quite clear on something you have just heard? Or worse, not being clear on something you just interpreted? Often, interpreters can watch a text and understand it on a general level, but may not be altogether clear on whether the speaker\/signer was encouraging or discouraging us on the topic, or whether the s\/he enjoyed the activity just described or not. We may be left wondering how one particular portion of the text related to the rest. Now imagine you are on the receiving end of such messages. Understanding and using discourse or transition markers in ASL helps us produce a more cohesive, coherent interpreted message. Participants will work in small groups with text that will allow opportunity for participants to recognize discourse\/transition markers, and practice incorporating those markers. [.3 CEUs pending (BEI\/RID)]\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAFTERNOON: 1:30pm – 4:30pm 
\n\t“Looking for Meaning in All Those Words!”<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThis workshop is designed to present realistic and practical applications of ASL techniques. We will be focusing primarily on identifying meaningful pieces of information within the message we are interpreting. We will also learn concepts that will enable you to effectively use practice time as you improve your interpreting skills, and also as you look toward taking your next performance test. We will define what is meant by meaningful phrases, and how to identify these phrases of meaning through the use of a variety of ASL techniques. There will be opportunities to practice these techniques within small groups in a safe environment. We will also introduce some self-evaluation techniques that will help establish goals and adjust performance accordingly. Participants will have the chance to network with other interpreters to establish study groups for continued practice if desired. [.3 CEUs pending (BEI\/RID)]\n<\/p>\n
