\n\tThe NAD responds to the urgent concern regarding the interpreter on stage during Nelson Mandela's Memorial Service on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 with three points:\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe NAD is always pleased when interpreters are provided at noteworthy events such as the inspiring memorial services for the beloved Nelson Mandela.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tEach country has its own national sign language and sometimes even regional sign languages.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe NAD urges all who plan for events such as the Mandela memorial services need to include deaf and hard of hearing people.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tPresident Christopher Wagner is pleased to report that "the NAD enthusiastically welcomes Jenny Buechner, an outstanding young leader who exemplifies the same passion and dedication for State Associations that our dear friend Michael Berger demonstrated in his time on the NAD Board. \n\tSHARE:  Congressional Deaf Awareness Briefing\n<\/p>\n

\n\tOn December 12th, the NAD joined Gallaudet University at a Congressional Deaf Awareness Briefing hosted by four Congressmen – Congressmen Mike Rodgers (R-AL), Steve Stockman (R-TX), Mark Takano (D-CA), and Kevin Yoder (R-KS). This briefing focused on challenges facing deaf and hard of hearing people in the workplace, creating opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing people on the Hill, and other policy issues affecting deaf and hard of hearing Americans. The NAD CEO Howard Rosenblum discussed access to employment, education, housing, transportation, telecommunications, among other important issues. The NAD is excited about working with Gallaudet University and these members of Congress to improve access and opportunities for all deaf and hard of hearing people.\n<\/p>\n

There were 74 national people with disabilities experts who recommended the following 16 outstanding nonprofit organizations.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tBakar is currently finishing up his last year at the Rochester Institute of Technology\/ National Technical Institute for the Deaf (RIT\/NTID), studying Urban and Community Studies and International Studies double major in RIT's College of Liberal Arts. He was born in Somalia and helped establish the Somali Deaf Union, the first Somali organization for deaf individuals in his country. It later developed into the Somali National Association of the Deaf (SNAD), and he served as its president.\n<\/p>\n
