Golf Tournaments and Poker Runs Support Deaf Youth and Other Deaf Programs<\/p>\n
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. \u2014 An ongoing series of nationwide golf tournaments and other fundraising events, like the recent Camp Lakodia Poker Run, have been planned on a year-round basis to help deaf and hard of hearing youth attend summer camps and to support local human service programs. CSD, a deaf and hard of hearing nonprofit human services organization, operates Camp Lakodia (located in Madison, S.D.) and holds a series of summer camps to help promote leadership, literacy and other activities to help create the deaf leaders of tomorrow.<\/p>\n
The first of four national golf tournaments took place in Frederick, Md. on June 5. The tournament had 48 participants and raised funds to assist CSD of Maryland in developing health literature and educational materials for the local deaf senior citizen population, so consumers can access the information more effectively. <\/p>\n
The upcoming golf tournaments will be held Aug. 14 at Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls, S.D.; Aug. 27 at Tapatio Springs Resort Golf Course in Boerne, Texas; and Sept. 15 at Oakhaven Golf Complex in Delaware, Ohio.<\/p>\n
Teams and individuals can register online at http:\/\/golf.c-s-d.org with a credit card or download a registration form from the Web site to fill out and mail or fax. Foursome team registration costs $400 per team and the individual fee $125 each.<\/p>\n
Team and individual performance awards will be given at each tournament as well as hole-in-one prizes and a $5,000 putting contest. Each registered golfer will also receive a complimentary gift certificate good for a free club.<\/p>\n
Besides the golf tournaments, events like the recent Camp Lakodia Poker Run are also being planned. Held May 20, motorcycle enthusiasts met at the Harley Davidson dealership in Sioux Falls and traveled the scenic route to Camp Lakodia, approximately 60 miles. Once at camp, the event featured a cookout, live music from Mike Connor and Terry Pospisil and also the Steve Eager Band, a bike \u201cbeauty contest,\u201d and sand volleyball matches. Participants also had the opportunity to stay overnight at the cabins, as well. Over 80 people, including riders and volunteers, participated in this event. The main sponsors were J&L Harley and the Blue Lion Co. All proceeds went to sponsor deaf youth camp program attendees.<\/p>\n
