It targets interpreters with no experience to some experience with mental health interpreting and interpreters in general who want more specific information on mental health interpreting.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tParticipants will be able to articulate common mental health interpreting environments and what\/who they involve, become more familiar with unique aspects of mental health interpreting, such as the Mini Mental Status Exam, language dysfluency issues due to mental illness and reporting personal safety issues in mental health environments. Participants will also learn where to access resources for increasing training and experience in mental health interpreting.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe target audience includes interpreters with no experience to some experience with mental health interpreting and interpreters in general who want more specific information on mental health interpreting. She is currently the physician for the Family-Focused Center (FFC) for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children at Children&rsquo;s Medical Center Dallas\/UT Southwestern Medical Center. The FFC provides support for families to make informed decisions regarding their deaf\/hard of hearing child, as well as provide education and&nbsp;collaborative support to providers caring for these patients in keeping with national standards.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDr. St. John also works as a health education consultant at state and national levels and is co-founder of MedTerp which provides professional development education for medical interpreters. She continues to serve as adjunct faculty in the graduate department of counseling at Gallaudet University.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDr. St. John received her BS degree in psychology at George Mason University, completed her MD degree at the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine and then attended Georgetown University Hospital for her residency in pediatrics. She holds an MA degree in counseling from Gallaudet University and in the past, served as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and the Director of the Kids Clinic for the Deaf at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tEstablishing yourself as an ASL interpreter in the community requires flexibility and knowledge. Reputation, work ethic and business practices all play into your level of success as a working interpreter. This activity is taught through the experiences of the presenter and her relocation from the interpreting community in Washington DC to Dallas, Texas. Concepts such as pre-work investigating, getting a business mentor, working&nbsp;with agencies vs. freelancing, marketing and contract negotiation will be discussed.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tParticipants will be able to articulate components of what defines professional reputation and feel more comfortable with strategies for engaging a business mentor and negotiating financial compensation.
