Historic Scarbrough Building Windows Dressed for the Holiday by Texas
\nSchool for the Deaf <\/p>\n
Want a unique opportunity to enjoy some holiday window gazing while
\nlearning something about the young Deaf artists who attend Texas
\nSchool for the Deaf, their unique culture and the distinguished
\nhistory of their school? Visit the Scarbrough building in downtown
\nAustin on the southwest corner of 6th and Congress. <\/p>\n
For the month of December through January 12, the Scarbrough windows
\nare adorned with large 4\u0019x8\u0019 holiday multimedia posters depicting
\nstill photos of students \u001csigning\u001d holiday carols, hanging photo
\nmontages and Elementary student \u001choliday hand\u001d mobiles. Reflecting
\nthe technology that the school is known for, large flat screen TV\u0019s
\nbring to life the work of Video Technology and Digital Graphics
\nstudents teamed up with student\u0019s studying American Sign Language as
\na foreign language in a compilation of movies and animated holiday
\nsequences. <\/p>\n
Also on display in the 6th Street window is a winterized replica of
\nthe school\u0019s treasured \u001cMule Ears\u001d building, which dominated the
\nAustin skyline from 1877 to 1957. The building\u0019s 6th street interior
\nlobby is showcasing pieces from the exhibit \u001cThe Greatest Story Never
\nHeard\u001d originally on display at the Austin Bergstrom International
\nAirport in honor of the school\u0019s Sesquicentennial last year. The
\nexhibit demonstrates \u001cthen and now\u001d perspectives in school uniforms,
\neducational approaches in the classroom, technology and athletics. <\/p>\n
The exhibit includes informative decals, which provide interesting
\ninformation about these young artists, their dreams and their
\nthoughts about their art. Displayed to such a wide-reaching audience,
\nstudents\u0019 faces were overjoyed when they saw their artwork installed.
\nFranna Camenisch, TSD alumna and curator of the school\u0019s museum,
\nreflected on shopping at downtown Scarbrough\u0019s as a young girl, but
\ncommented, \u001cI never in a million years thought I would one day be
\ndecorating these windows. It\u0019s truly spectacular for the Deaf
\ncommunity.\u001d <\/p>\n
