Hearing Loss Resource Specialist (Austin (Region 7), TX) <\/p>\n
This Position is a Grant-Funded Position and will be filled,
\ncontingent upon grant award notice. <\/p>\n
Position Description: <\/p>\n
The Hearing Loss Resource Specialist facilitates access to services
\nof federal, state and local governments, organizations and private
\nentities for persons who are hard of hearing, late-deafened or oral
\ndeaf and who may be un-served or underserved in Region Seven. The
\nSpecialist also works with state and local governments, organizations
\nand private entities to make their services accessible and readily
\navailable to consumers by removing attitudinal and communication
\naccess barriers. The program assists consumers by sharing information
\nabout services available, and offers direct support in the various
\naspects of coping with hearing loss by providing training,
\ninformation and referral services. <\/p>\n
Essential Functions: <\/p>\n
** Provide consultative knowledge and expertise in working directly
\nwith hard of hearing, late-deafened or oral deaf consumers across
\nhearing loss topics (i.e., coping mechanisms, assistive technology,
\nmaintaining a holistic lifestyle- family, employment, social circle
\nsupport, etc.). <\/p>\n
** Work with consumers to identify service needs and link consumers
\nto resources (i.e., support groups, social networks) and services
\n(i.e., vocational rehabilitation, audiological) to facilitate
\ncontinued independence and communication access. <\/p>\n
** Develop a peer network among un-served or underserved hard of
\nhearing citizens and stakeholders to promote awareness of such
\nservices and support system towards a systems change advocacy
\ncapacity. <\/p>\n
** Market the positive facets of living with a hearing loss through
\ngeneral public awareness (i.e., assistive device demonstration,
\nhearing loss trends) and targeted outreach activities (i.e., service
\nprovider training, consumer recruitment) to enhance services,
\nresources, utilization and awareness of issues. <\/p>\n
** Ensure services and outcomes are of expected quality through
\nfollow-up contacts with consumers. <\/p>\n
** Work closely with the Regional Specialist to develop competencies
\nfor providing services to hard of hearing, late-deafened and oral
\ndeaf consumers including partnership roles in the provision of direct
\nservices, consultation and public education activities. <\/p>\n
** Develop partnerships (i.e., audiologists, hearing aid dispensers,
\nspeech-language pathologists, state and local service provider
\nagencies, educational systems, private businesses, and nursing homes)
\nthrough outreaching and networking activities to facilitate equal
\naccess and the provision of services. <\/p>\n
** Work collaboratively with state and local governments,
\norganizations and private entities to make services accessible and
\nreadily available to consumers by removing attitudinal and
\ncommunication access barriers. <\/p>\n
** Maintain electronic and paper database of service records to
\ncomply with funding and programmatic reporting requirements. <\/p>\n
** Perform other related tasks as assigned. <\/p>\n
Qualifications: <\/p>\n
** Bachelor\u0019s Degree in related human service field or equivalent
\nexperience required <\/p>\n
** Must be able to communicate effectively with deaf and hard of
\nhearing individuals and demonstrate the ability to advocate the
\nrights of these individuals <\/p>\n
** Must have knowledge of telecommunication equipment devices for
\ndeaf and hard of hearing consumers <\/p>\n
** Familiarity with hard of hearing issues, hearing loss types,
\ncommunication access options (i.e., CART) strategies, differences in
\nthe thresholds of deafness, and legal rights (i.e., ADA, IDEA) of
\nhard of hearing individuals. <\/p>\n
** Demonstrated respect and sensitivity to the various communication,
\ncoping and amplification (i.e., cochlear implant) issues and decisions
\nmade by the target population <\/p>\n
** Familiarity with local, state and national resources for the hard
\nof hearing population. <\/p>\n
** Ability to effectively foster good public relations within the
\ncommunity <\/p>\n
** Knowledge of deaf culture and resources related to deafness <\/p>\n
** Experience and skills in making public presentations <\/p>\n
** Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows software (Word, Excel,
\nPowerPoint, Outlook) <\/p>\n
** Must have own transportation and be willing to travel <\/p>\n

** Wages based upon experience; PTO, Health\/Vision\/Dental Insurance,
\nEAP. This is a full-time position with a Pay Grade 10. <\/p>\n
