This set of workshops will combine presentations by professionals,
\ngroup discussion, and practical application practice sessions to
\nprovide training to any certified interpreter which will increase the
\nskill level of Courtroom certified interpreters. During this course we
\nwill present vocabulary for courtroom situations, hear presentations
\nby legal professions who have responsibility for courtroom
\nproceedings, hold lecture and discussion about role of the
\ninterpreter in courtroom , and participate in practical application
\nsessions utilizing actual courtroom proceeding. We will utilize a
\ntranscript and video from Houston Area DWI trial defended by
\nAdvocacy, Inc. Presenter, Lesa Thomas has studied this trial as part
\nher dissertation research through Texas A&M University. Interpreters
\nwill learn new and review court specific vocabulary in English and
\nASL, gain knowledge of the court system, and practice interpreting
\nskills as applied to a trial situation <\/p>\n
Day 1 <\/p>\n
12:30 pm to 2:30 pm Presentation by Legal Professional – Review of
\njudicial system and court protocol. (name of Judge or attorney to be
\nannounced). <\/p>\n
2:30 \u0013 2:45 Break <\/p>\n
2:45 \u0013 3:15 Discussion of recent court experience either interpreted
\nor witnessed with focus on courtroom protocol. (Time limit of 5
\nminutes per person relating the experience that impacts your thinking
\non court protocol. Focus on Court interpreters but open to others.) <\/p>\n
3:15 \u0013 4:40 Practical Application session – Review and discussion of
\nvocabulary used in legal proceedings for DWI trial. Discussion of
\npossible translations and meanings of vocabulary used. Small group
\nrotation through 4 moderators (Court Certified interpreters) at
\nstations utilizing written transcript of trial. <\/p>\n
4:40 \u0013 5:00 Break <\/p>\n
5:00 \u0013 5:20 Large group discussion of small group findings. <\/p>\n
5:20- 5:30 Distribute handout and short lecture on how to give
\nappropriate, constructive feedback. (Handout developed for feedback
\ndocumentations that interpreters will take home) <\/p>\n
5:30 \u0013 6:30 Practical Application session – Listen to the actual
\ntrial and in groups of three have 10 minutes segments to interpret.
\nPause trial for 5 minutes to discuss feedback and then switch
\ninterpreter to continue. <\/p>\n
Day 2 \u0013 Attendance at Day 1 required for admission to Day 2 <\/p>\n
9:00 am to 10:00 am Questions answered and discussion from Homework
\nemails from Day 1. <\/p>\n
10:00 to 11:00 Presentation on DWI trial processes by Legal
\nProfessional. (name of Attorney or Judge to be determined) <\/p>\n
11:00 \u0013 11:15 Break <\/p>\n
11:15 \u0013 12:15 Presentation of the Role of the Court Interpreter in
\nthe United States Legal System and review of rationale for use of
\ninterpreters in the United States Legal System by Lesa Thomas <\/p>\n
12:15 \u0013 12:30 Break for prepare potluck lunch and resume workshop
\nwhile eating. <\/p>\n
12:30 \u0013 1:10 Court Room Logistics. Standard for physical layout of
\nthe court room will be described and demonstrated through memorable
\nvisual props. Clean up lunch at end of this session. <\/p>\n
1:10 \u0013 2:45 Practical Application session – Watch video of actual
\ncourt proceedings, rotating practice in groups of three with one
\nperson is interpreting, while the other two give feedback: 10 minutes
\nof interpreting, 5 minutes for feedback, then rotate. With break at
\nappropriate time <\/p>\n
2:45 \u0013 3:00 Wrap up, discussion of date of next workshop and homework
\nassignment for the study <\/p>\n
