Ja Chambless, director of <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"8db7b270-ee58-4e15-8649-48db02360808\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"01366325-9c7f-48d8-9df4-4471e12a51b5\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"0e311c54-021f-46ca-8d5f-d392436a3639\">Pattillo School<\/span><\/span><\/span> in DeWitt, told <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"d69c914f-ef79-490d-b8b0-747c54c8ec67\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"9ab3b4fa-6d0a-4471-9edd-e6f3f739f3a0\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"6b081a90-b8fb-4cb4-ba9e-cfe7b9b9e346\">member<\/span><\/span><\/span> of the Stuttgart Rotary Club Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Chambless learned sign language while attending Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My instructor was deaf and he was also the postmaster,&#8221; Chambless said. &#8220;I learned a lot from that class.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Chambless explained that the majority of parents of deaf children <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"619f3a2e-d908-4903-a1cf-280b7805ab78\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"ddf497c2-3d4b-4444-ab55-4392b87f8949\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"f2028d21-01f5-4e99-98f0-899376e8ca0c\">are<\/span><\/span><\/span> hearing and verbal parents and do not know sign language.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sign language is for people who speak,&#8221; Chambless said. &#8220;It is a way to communicate with deaf people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The use of sign language is very popular and used in day cares and facilities such as the Pattillo School to communicate with non-verbal children as infants and toddler before they begin talking, Chambless said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I teach the basic things using sign language such as stand, sit, go, stop to the little ones,&#8221; Chambless said. &#8220;I used it on my own kids.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Deaf people give you a sign name, which matches your characteristics,&#8221; Chambless said. &#8220;That is done when they get to know you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Arkansas School for the Deaf, located at 2400 West Markham St. <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"b65899d8-d2d4-4d90-b315-36507d1639f4\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"8c90df77-4470-42ce-8cfd-e6d46bd609c7\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"c8bc3661-4d89-4a3b-867f-ada4cc615c2e\">in<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"821c445d-3190-4e23-af91-aa67c23e5a00\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"1ccde0a9-e173-45d0-aaa2-1b0a11674f67\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"553caf40-a44b-4309-a878-7df1566382e6\">little<\/span><\/span><\/span> Rock, is a leader in the field of deaf education with students from all over the state of Arkansas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a school in Little Rock (the Arkansas School for the Deaf), since around 1850 that teaches deaf children how to sign,&#8221; Chambless said. &#8220;They also have classes for adults.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Pattillo School is a child care facility for all children and children with physical and developmental disabilities, similar to that of Easter Seals in Stuttgart.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the Pattillo School, call (870) 946-1606.
