Texas School for the Deaf’s Exhibit At Historic Scarbrough Building A
\nMust-See for Downtown Revelers<\/p>\n
Austin, Texas\u00c2\u00a0– December 31, 2007 Make the Scarbrough building at
\nSixth Street and Congress Avenue a stop along the way while enjoying
\nAustin’s downtown celebration today.<\/p>\n
Students from the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) have dressed the
\nwindows of the historic downtown building for the holidays and
\nencourage you to experience the pride they share in their school by
\nenjoying this special sampling of their work at TSD. The incredible
\nexhibit of student art and history is on display through January 7th
\nat the Scarbrough building. After a recent visit, Pat Pound,
\nExecutive Director of the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with
\nDisabilities, commented “it is fantastic&what a wonderful Christmas
\ngift TSD has given the city of Austin.”<\/p>\n
The Scarbrough building’s windows are adorned with giant multimedia
\nposters, holiday inspired art and incredible video compilations, all
\ncreated by TSD student artists. Featured in the Sixth Street window
\nis a winterized replica of the school’s treasured “Towers” building
\nthat dominated the Austin skyline from 1877 to 1957. Each window
\ndisplay tells its own story and acquaints onlookers with the aspiring
\nartists behind the creative works. There are even opportunities to
\nlearn a few American Sign Language signs used in communication among
\ndeaf and hard of hearing individuals.<\/p>\n
Inside the Sixth Street art deco lobby of the Scarbrough, TSD
\nshowcases pieces from its historical exhibit, “The Greatest Story
\nNever Heard”, originally on display last year at the Austin Bergstrom
\nInternational Airport in honor of the school’s Sesquicentennial
\nanniversary. Comparing items “then and now” from the last 100 years,
\nsee the evolution of educational approaches in the classroom, school
\nuniforms, assistive technologies and athletics, and see how TSD has
\ngrown into a leading-edge institution of learning with a national
\nreputation for excellence in deaf education.<\/p>\n
