Why You Should Enter <\/p>\n
Enter your company, an individual or an organization for employing,
\nempowering, and promoting the talents and abilities of Texans with
\ndisabilities as recognition for a job well done. <\/p>\n
Available Award Categories <\/p>\n
The Governor\u0019s Trophy (individual) \u0014 first awarded in 1993. The
\nGovernor\u0019s Trophy is the highest honor and may be awarded to a person
\nwho has done the most to enhance the empowerment and employment of
\nTexans with disabilities. The award recognizes long-term commitment
\nand outstanding efforts at both the community and state level.
\nEnhanced quality of life, scope and spirit of effort are also
\nconsiderations. <\/p>\n
The Entrepreneurship Award (a living entrepreneur with a disability)
\n\u0014 first awarded in 1997. The Entreneurship Award may be given to an
\nentrepreneur with a disability who has displayed skills, leadership,
\nand initiative necessary to successfully own (at least 51%) and
\noperate a for profit business.<\/p>\n
Martha Arbuckle Award (local committee) \u0014 first awarded in 1989. The
\nMartha Arbuckle Award may be given to a local committee on people
\nwith disabilities for the most innovative program of the year. This
\naward is presented in memory of Martha Arbuckle, a long time
\ndisability advocate from Austin.<\/p>\n
Employer Awards (business and government) \u0014 first awarded in 1979. A
\ntotal of five employer awards may be given to businesses and
\ngovernment employers for recruiting, accommodating, employing, and
\nadvancing Texans with disabilities. A philosophy supporting
\nopportunities for all Texans, including people with disabilities, is
\nviewed as a strength. Workplace efforts related to ADA, including
\narchitectural, program, and communication access, are key elements.
\nBusiness and government focus on the ability of employees, not the
\ndisability, and satisfaction of customers with disabilities are
\nconsiderations. Promotion of business opportunities for people with
\ndisabilities is also an important element. <\/p>\n
* Private Employer \u0014 awards for employment and empowerment (small,
\nmedium, and large businesses) <\/p>\n
* Public Employer \u0014 awards for employment and empowerment (federal
\nand non-federal government) <\/p>\n
How The Winners Will Be Recognized <\/p>\n
The winner of The Governor\u0019s Trophy will be presented with a
\nbeautifully crafted glass trophy. The winner of the Governor\u0019s
\nCommittee Entrepreneurship Award will be presented with a uniquely
\netched glass award. Other winners will receive a specially framed and
\nmatted congratulatory letter from the Governor. Disability
\norganizations, businesses, and the media statewide will be notified
\nof the award recipients. <\/p>\n
The Governor\u0019s Committee began the statewide employment awards
\nprogram in 1979 to recognize employers and others who have
\ncontributed significantly to the employment and empowerment of Texans
\nwith disabilities. Traditionally, the awards have been presented
\nduring the month of October, which is National Disability Employment
\nAwareness Month (NDEAM). <\/p>\n

employment \u0014 activity in which one engages or is employed <\/p>\n
entrepreneur \u0014 one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a
\nbusiness or enterprise <\/p>\n
advancement \u0014 promotion or elevation to higher rank or position <\/p>\n
awareness \u0014 having or showing realization, perception, or knowledge <\/p>\n
recruitment \u0014 to enlist new members; to secure the services of <\/p>\n
empowerment \u0014 enable; to give official authority or legal power <\/p>\n
outreach \u0014 to reach out <\/p>\n
sensitivity \u0014 the quality or state of being sensitive; awareness of
\nthe needs or emotions of others <\/p>\n
integration \u0014 to incorporate into the larger unit <\/p>\n
inclusion \u0014 the act of including; the state of being included <\/p>\n
ability \u0014 the quality or state of being able <\/p>\n
accommodation \u0014 the provision of what is needed or desired <\/p>\n
philosophy \u0014 the most general beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an
\nindividual or group <\/p>\n
access \u0014 freedom or ability to obtain or make use of; the action of
\ngoing to or reaching; permission, liberty, or ability to enter,
\napproach, communicate with, or pass to and from <\/p>\n
communication \u0014 to transmit information, thought, or feeling so that
\nit is satisfactorily received or understood <\/p>\n
innovation \u0014 introduction of something new; a new idea, method or
\ndevice <\/p>\n
range \u0014 the space or extent included, covered, or used; to change or
\ndiffer within limits <\/p>\n
advocate \u0014 to plead in favor of; support <\/p>\n
