Sign language.<\/p>\n<p>Becky Minkel was an elementary school teacher. She said she was in love with her kids but not in love with that type of teaching. She was inspired by those who taught sign language<span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"179b76d3-282a-4e59-81fb-aac7fef4924f\">.<\/span>So, she took a sign language class and never looked back.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There isn&#8217;t one thing that isn&#8217;t positive about the deaf culture that isn&#8217;t overwhelmingly amazing to me,&#8221; said Minkel.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"c4496140-29e2-4c4f-8430-da1533eaad2d\">Minkel<\/span> first became fascinated with the language when her friend back in Wichita Falls would sign <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"2bb6dfc5-35ea-4640-b695-387bec1ed7a4\">to<\/span> her without even realizing it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The first time I saw my girlfriend <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"e7cd04fe-d477-4c1d-ba73-740a0d9e4124\">signing<\/span> just to me in <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"333eb1ab-4dbb-45a1-b0d0-78ad7517535d\">conversation not<\/span> knowing she was doing it and now I do that. I&#8217;ll go out with my girlfriends and they will be <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"b4103643-a23b-4086-85c8-b989e95ddca8\">like you<\/span> know you just signed the menu to our server.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She started taking a continuing <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"6693e7c9-6d44-4624-9f67-f947bde0b8b6\">ed<\/span> class, while still teaching kindergarten, and absolutely fell in love with the language.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I used it kind of as a teaching tool and a discipline because we would walk down the hall and sign the alphabet or their spelling words and they were very quiet so I thought it was great.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When she moved back to Tyler, she took more classes at TJC with her son.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I knew the language because of my deaf friends, yet he seemed to pass the test with higher grades each time, I was like wait a minute<span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"d083862c-3a5b-49f5-b627-050ff2baa264\">(<\/span>laughs).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She now interprets hymns at her church and volunteers to use sign language at weddings and funerals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the prettiest language out there, it really is to express yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"c45c208b-c2fa-4733-9cbb-3ed76b931a11\">Minkel<\/span> also owns an interpreting business and is currently helping a young girl get through beauty school.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just love it.
