NAD Settles Complaint Against Service Provider <\/p>\n
Silver Spring, MD – The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) has
\nsettled a complaint, filed with the United States Department of
\nJustice, against a company that provides behavioral counseling and
\npsychological services for children with autism spectrum disorders,
\nchallenging behavior and related developmental disabilities. The
\ncomplaint alleged that the company refused to provide services for a
\nhearing child because his parents are deaf, a violation of Title III
\nof the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). <\/p>\n
\u001cThe NAD is committed to accessible health care services by deaf and
\nhard of hearing individuals and their families. We are pleased that
\nthis settlement creates the necessary policy change to uphold ADA
\nrequirements,\u001d said NAD President Bobbie Beth Scoggins. <\/p>\n
The company agreed to pay $7,500 and to modify its policies to
\nprovide auxiliary aids and services, such as qualified interpreter
\nservices, when necessary to ensure effective communication with deaf
\nand hard of hearing patients and family members. \u001cHealth care
\nproviders cannot refuse to treat patients because a patient or family
\nmember is deaf or hard of hearing,\u001d said Michael Stein, attorney with
\nthe NAD Law and Advocacy Center. \u001cThe ADA requires health care
\nproviders to ensure effective communication with deaf and hard of
\nhearing individuals.\u001d <\/p>\n
